BMW has recently unveiled one of its most talked-about concept cars of the year, the Vision BMW Alpina. Revealed at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy, the car is described as a one-off design study, but it represents much more than just a show car. It gives the clearest look yet at the future direction of the newly integrated BMW Alpina brand.

This is also the first major reveal since BMW took full control of Alpina in early 2026 after acquiring the long-running Bavarian performance brand. For years, Alpina was known for building more refined and luxurious versions of BMW models. Now, BMW appears to be positioning Alpina as a more exclusive brand that will sit above regular BMW models while remaining below Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in the group’s luxury lineup.

BMW’s Vision Alpina is a 5.2-metre grand tourer

The Vision BMW Alpina is a large two-door, four-seat grand tourer measuring 5,200 mm in length. That makes it much bigger than the old BMW 8 Series coupe it loosely draws inspiration from. BMW says the idea behind the car is “Speed, Refined,” focusing on blending performance with long-distance comfort.

The concept was developed under the direction of Adrian van Hooydonk, with exterior design led by Maximilian Missoni. Reports also suggest that Alex Innes, known for working on exclusive Rolls-Royce Motor Cars projects like the Boat Tail, contributed to the project after joining Alpina in 2024. BMW says the goal is to keep Alpina’s identity intact while giving it a more modern and premium direction under the company’s ownership.

One of the most interesting things about the Vision BMW Alpina is how clean and restrained the design looks. Instead of being overly aggressive, the car focuses on elegant proportions with a long bonnet and a low coupe-style roofline. BMW says the design takes inspiration from the classic Alpina B7 Coupe based on the old BMW 6 Series (E24).

At the front, the car gets a slim illuminated kidney grille inspired by the classic BMW 507. The headlights feature crystal-like detailing, giving the front a sharp but premium look. Even though the concept uses a V8 engine, the grille is mostly closed.

The side profile stays smooth and simple, avoiding heavy cuts and sharp styling lines. Classic Alpina elements are still present, including the signature multi-spoke wheels, subtle body stripes, quad exhaust tips, and Alpina badging. BMW has also said future Alpina models may get hand-painted stripes instead of decals. At the rear, the car gets slim LED tail-lights with a crystal-inspired design that matches the front lighting theme.

Vision BMW Alpina interior — four seats, crystal glasses and Neue Klasse technology

Inside, the Vision BMW Alpina gets a premium cabin finished with full-grain leather and a two-tone colour theme. The dashboard combines wood, metal, and crystal-style detailing to create a clean luxury-focused look.

The tech setup is based on BMW’s latest Neue Klasse design language. Highlights include a new four-spoke steering wheel with the Alpina logo, a wide head-up display across the windshield, a large central touchscreen, and a separate display for the passenger. Crystal elements are used for controls like the drive selector and window switches. At the rear, the concept even includes a small storage section with crystal glasses and a glass water bottle, adding a more luxury-focused touch compared to regular BMW performance models.

BMW Alpina's V8 engine

Under the bonnet, the Vision BMW Alpina uses a twin-turbo V8 engine. BMW has not shared full performance figures yet, but the use of a V8 is important because many luxury brands are now moving toward fully electric powertrains.

BMW says the car is designed to feel refined rather than overly aggressive. The exhaust note is tuned to sound deep and smooth during normal driving, while becoming sharper under hard acceleration.

Future Alpina models are expected to include some electrified options, but V8-powered cars are still likely to remain part of the lineup for now. The concept itself does not use a hybrid or electric setup.

What comes next — Production models from 2027

The Vision BMW Alpina will not enter production in this exact form, but BMW has made it clear that the concept previews the future direction of the Alpina brand. The first production model under BMW’s ownership is expected to be based on the BMW 7 Series and could arrive in 2027, followed later by an SUV based on the BMW X7.

BMW is positioning Alpina as a more exclusive luxury brand sitting above regular BMW models but below Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The company also does not plan to chase high sales volumes. Instead, the focus will remain on limited-production luxury cars.
