Bred from the ‘Kei car’ culture prevailing in Japan, Maruti Wagon R was squeezed in Indian market circa 1998 with a sole motive of tapping the middle-class family market. More than a decade down the line this vehicle has now become a staple vehicle in Indian families and the reason for this was not its design (let us not even start on the amount of body roll in it) or the fuel economy but the reliability and maintenance.
‘With great power comes great responsibilities’, but the lack of power and a ‘zombie’ like steering response dictated us otherwise. Used Wagon R is quite a popular option as the depreciation in this little turtle-like vehicle is quite high and it is available at a much cheaper price tag compared to its competitors.

The new Maruti Wagon R is kept in a much pocket-friendly budget which exposes it to a much broader spectrum of middle-class families. The bandwidth of on-road prices does not deviate that much but that is not the case with Bengaluru, as our very own WagonR costs almost the same as a Maruti Swift Vxi in other cities.

WagonR solidified its place in a typical Indian family’s mind but it took a step back when it came to performance. Maruti decided to put in their power-packed K12 engine in this little box and tossed the power figure up to 81bhp.
The transmission is as clunky as its ancestors and with the introduction of automatic transmission WagonR, it becomes clear that Maruti is busy cutting costs on its vehicles rather than concentrating on build quality.

The 2019 Wagon R is now fitted with Suzuki’s famous K-series engine and that has undoubtedly increased WagonR’s mileage. With much-improved performance and power delivery it sure is a little more fun than its predecessors.

Previous versions of WagonR used an A-pillar chassis which was rated 0 stars in global NCAP safety ratings. Maruti after its failed safety ratings decided to bring in their ‘Brahmastra’ already placed in Japanese tall-boys, they call it the ‘Heartect’ platform. A much safer WagonR is also equipped with passenger and driver airbags and ABS.
For years WagonR has proved its potential of being a perfect family car. There were even some instances when a group of petrolheads decided to fit this docile car with some performance upgrades such as a turbocharger (yes, a turbocharger in a WagonR) and turned this sheep into a bellowing Rhino.
WagonR’s most serious competition Hyundai Santro has always given up on its almost tall boy body structure and caved in to a more hatchback-y version of it. Though that body roll is still there, very little has been done by Hyundai to keep up with Maruti’s pace. If we travel down the used market a bit, used Wagon R are still a hype and a much value for money car.
The newly wedded drivetrain and upgraded cabin space will definitely keep that hype up in used car market like its ancestors.

As per ARAI, WagonR churns out 17.8kms in a litre of petrol. This average is then multiplied in case of the CNG variant as it drills up to 26.8kms/kg.
