Kia Sonet

The mechanical lineup of the Kia Sonet is one of the most comprehensive in the compact SUV segment. It offers three engines paired with manual, clutchless manual (iMT), torque converter automatic, and dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. All variants send power to the front wheels (2WD) and come equipped with an Idle Stop & Go (ISG) system to conserve fuel at traffic stops.

1.2L Smartstream Naturally Aspirated Petrol

Serving as the entry point to the Sonet lineup, the 1,197 cc 4-cylinder Smartstream petrol engine produces 82 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It gets only a 5-speed manual transmission.

Regardless, this engine has no issues with handling everyday city commuting. At idle, the 4-cylinder configuration stays quiet and refined. Power delivery off the line is smooth and predictable, without any spikes. While it naturally doesn’t have the strong mid-range punch for rapid highway overtakes, you do get an easy, stress-free driving experience in urban traffic.

1.0L Smartstream T-GDi Turbo-Petrol

For drivers who want stronger performance, the 998 cc 3-cylinder direct-injection turbo-petrol engine is the more preferred choice. It generates 118 bhp at 6,000 rpm and a healthy 172 Nm of peak torque across a wide band from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. Transmission choices include a 6-speed clutchless manual (6iMT) and a fast-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT).

Once past 1,800 rpm, the turbo spools cleanly, providing high mid-range acceleration that makes overtaking slower-moving traffic on open highways quite effortless. The 7-speed DCT shifts with precision, while the 6iMT offers the control of a manual gearbox without the extra stress of working a clutch pedal in heavy traffic.

1.5L CRDi VGT Diesel

The 1,493 cc 4-cylinder CRDi diesel engine produces 114 bhp at 4,000 rpm and a muscular 250 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 2,750 rpm. You can pick this one up with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission (6AT).

It delivers strong low-end tractability, pulling cleanly from just above idle without the need for frequent downshifts. On highways, the diesel Sonet also settles into an effortless high-speed cruise, returning excellent touring range and high fuel efficiency even when the car is fully loaded with passengers and luggage.

City Driving Performance

City driving is a stress-free affair with all three engines of the Kia Sonet. Its light electronic power steering makes U-turns and parking manoeuvres effortless, while the automatic transmission variants help a lot with city commutes. The 6-speed torque-converter automatic on the diesel operates well in stop-and-go crawls without any jerkiness, while the 7-speed DCT on the turbo-petrol provides quick step-off responses.

Forward and peripheral visibility is also high thanks to the upright seating position, slim A-pillars and large wing mirrors. Higher variants benefit from front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera with a blind-spot view monitor in the digital instrument cluster.

Highway Performance & Ride Quality

On open highways, the Kia Sonet displays composed and planted road manners. The suspension architecture uses independent MacPherson struts with coil springs at the front and a Coupled Torsion Beam Axle (CTBA) with coil springs at the rear.

The suspension feels firm, though. While you will experience sharp road bumps and deep potholes at slow city speeds, this firmer setup does keep the chassis stable at 100 kmph on the highways. Vertical bounce over expansion joints is well-controlled, and body roll around fast corners is kept in check. As for braking, the lower trims get front disc and rear drum brakes, while the HTX, GTX+, and X-Line variants feature all-wheel disc brakes for shorter stopping distances.

Which Powertrain Should You Choose?

• 1.2L Petrol (5-speed MT): Best for those looking for the lowest upfront purchase price who primarily drive inside city limits.
• 1.0L Turbo Petrol (6iMT / 7DCT): Ideal for drivers who want strong mid-range acceleration, modern two-pedal automatic convenience and higher open-road performance.
• 1.5L Diesel (6-speed MT / 6-speed AT): The sensible pick for high-mileage users and long-distance highway commuters.

The Tech Line starts the Sonet range, spread out across multiple trims that balance budget constraints with modern convenience features. Beyond these, you can check out the GT Line (GTX+) and the exclusive, stealth-themed X-Line if you want more aggressive visuals and sports-themed interiors.

HTE & HTE (O)

The entry-level HTE variant gets a 4.2-inch colour TFT instrument cluster, front power windows, electric-adjust outside mirrors, tilt steering, front 12V and dual Type-C charging ports and 15-inch steel wheels with full covers. It also features 6 airbags.

The HTE (O) variant adds desirable styling and comfort upgrades like an electric sunroof, manual rear door sunshade curtains and rear power windows.

HTK (O) & HTK+

The HTK (O) trim introduces an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rear-view camera with dynamic guidelines, Driving Rear View Monitor (DRVM), Fully Automatic Temperature Control (FATC), auto headlamps and Star Map connected LED rear tail lamps.

The HTK+ trim builds on this by adding a smart key with push-button engine start/stop, remote engine start via smart key (on diesel), a smartphone wireless charging pad and a D-cut sporty steering wheel.

HTK+ (O) & HTX

The HTK+ (O) trim improves exterior styling and interior comfort. Outside, it gets Crown Jewel LED headlamps and Ice Cube LED fog lamps. The cabin is revamped with full leatherette seats finished in an Indigo Pera interior theme and a rear centre armrest with cup holders.

The HTX variant, meanwhile, adds all-wheel disc brakes, front ventilated seats, cruise control, a Smart Pure Air Purifier with virus protection and LED ambient mood lighting. On automatic variants, the HTX also includes paddle shifters.

GTX+ (GT Line)

The GTX+ trim is the sportiest expression of the Sonet. On the outside, you can see a knurled dark chrome surround on the signature Tiger Nose grille, dark chrome skid plates with metallic accents on the front and rear bumpers, LED ambient sound lighting, and 16-inch crystal-cut alloy wheels.

The technology suite on the GTX+ is comprehensive, with dual 10.25-inch screens, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, a 360-degree surround-view camera and Level 1 ADAS.

X-Line

The X-Line starts heading into flagship territory, commanding the highest Kia Sonet car price. It is for buyers who want an exclusive, factory-finished custom look without resorting to aftermarket modifications. The exterior gets an exclusive Xclusive Matte Graphite paint shade accented by gloss black finishes on the front grille mesh, fog lamp surrounds, outside mirror caps and rear skid plate. 

Inside, the X-Line gets a unique Sage Green leatherette upholstery set against an all-black interior with subtle orange contrast stitching and dark metallic accents.

Fuel efficiency is one considerable strength of the Kia Sonet across all its three engine options. Supported by a standard 45-litre fuel tank and the Idle Stop & Go (ISG) system, the Sonet delivers practical mileage in mixed Indian driving conditions.

In real-world urban conditions, the 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol returns around 12 to 14 kmpl. The 1.0L turbo-petrol delivers between 10 and 12 kmpl in heavy city traffic, but this figure rises to 15 to 17 kmpl on steady highway cruises. But the 1.5L diesel engine easily achieves 15 to 17 kmpl in city crawls and delivers around 20 to 23 kmpl on open stretches. With its manual transmission, you can cover at least 900 km with a single tank.

The Kia Sonet has a muscular, upright profile, infusing its sub-4-metre city agility with bold styling cues borrowed from larger Kia SUVs like the Seltos. The front fascia has that famous Tiger Nose grille, framed by silver surrounds on lower trims and dark knurled chrome on upper variants.

Interestingly, some people find the car’s look polarising and call the design overly aggressive. They point out that it looks awkward from certain angles.

Front Profile

The lighting setup is sharp: base trims get halogen headlamps, the HTK (O) add Star Map LED DRLs, and the HTK+ (O) upwards get Crown Jewel LED headlamps paired with Ice Cube LED front fog lamps. The sculpted front bumper also has a wide lower air dam and rugged skid plates finished in silver, dark metal or gloss black depending on the persona.

Side Profile

From the side, you can see how the shoulder line flows from the front wings across the doors to meet the tail lamps. There’s black wheel arch cladding, along with door garnish, to protect against stone chips on broken roads.

You get 15-inch steel wheels with full covers on HTE and HTE (O); 16-inch dual-tone styled steel wheels on HTK and HTK (O); and 16-inch crystal-cut alloy wheels (215/60 R16 tyres) on HTK+, HTX, GTX+, and X-Line. At the top, there are roof rails that can carry extra loads. The ground clearance is 205 mm, which is enough to clear most speed breakers.

Rear Profile

Star Map connected LED tail lamps run across the width of the boot lid behind, giving the Kia Sonet a wide visual profile at night.

Its rear bumper is heavily sculpted, housing reverse parking sensors, vertical reflector strips and a chunky skid plate. There’s also an integrated rear spoiler with a high-mounted LED stop lamp, a hidden rear wiper with washer and a roof-mounted shark fin antenna.

The cabin of the new Kia Sonet focuses heavily on material quality, tactile switchgear and practical everyday ergonomics. The front seats offer good lateral support and firm cushioning that prevents back fatigue during long hours behind the wheel, while the rear bench can comfortably accommodate two adults and a child.

Front Row

The HTX, GTX+, and X-Line trims offer front seat ventilation, which provides a lot of cooling relief during Indian summers. The driver gets a 4-way power-adjustable seat on top trims as well, along with a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and a sliding front central armrest with storage.

Second Row

Knee room is enough for occupants up to 5'11", supported by scooped-out front seatbacks. Higher variants have semi-leatherette or full leatherette upholstery, a 60:40 split-folding rear bench, adjustable rear headrests, a central armrest with cup holders and factory-fitted manual rear door sunshade curtains.

Tech and Usability

Mid trims get an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Top variants (GTX+ and X-Line) feature a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen navigation system running Kia Connect with over 50 connected-car features, OTA map updates, and Alexa voice integration.

Lower variants use a 4.2-inch colour TFT display, while top models get a full 10.25-inch LCD digital cockpit displaying driving telemetry, tyre pressure readings, and ADAS status. A 4-speaker and 2-tweeter setup comes on mid trims, while top variants sit with an immersive 7-speaker Bose premium sound system.

As for charging, there’s a smartphone wireless charger with a cooling pad and multiple high-speed USB Type-C charging ports in both rows. You also get a dual-camera dashcam, a voice-assisted electric sunroof and smart key remote engine start.

Boot Space, Storage & Practicality

The Kia Sonet provides 385 litres of boot space, which can handle two large suitcases and a couple of duffle bags without any inconvenience for a family weekend trip. But if more cargo room is needed, the 60:40 split rear seats can be folded down. And other everyday cabin storage includes large door bins with 1-litre bottle holders, a cooled glovebox, a sunglasses holder, front seatback pockets and umbrella holders in the front doors.

Kia now equips the new Sonet with extensive electronic protection straight from the factory. But we need to note that it scored only a 1-star safety rating for adult occupants and 3 stars for children in the most recent Global NCAP crash tests.

Passive Safety

From the entry-level HTE to the flagship X-Line, the Sonet offers:

• 6 Airbags
• A highline Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with individual pressure readouts, rear parking sensors and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS).

• Front and rear 3-point seatbelts for all five seating positions with seatbelt reminders, speed-sensing auto door locks, impact-sensing auto door unlock and ISOFIX child-seat anchors.

   

Active Safety and Level 1 ADAS Suite

The usual standard active safety features include:

• Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA)

Many rivals actively challenge the Kia Sonet’s presence in the market. Some of them are the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Mahindra XUV 3XO. The Nexon and XUV 3XO especially stand out among the lot because they are a lot more structurally sound than the Sonet.

Kia Sonet vs Hyundai Venue

The Sonet and Venue share underlying chassis and engine hardware. The Venue offers a marginally softer suspension setup for low-speed city bumps. This car also has a 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP.

However, the Sonet has an edge with its more aggressive exterior styling, front ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera with blind-spot view monitor and a true torque-converter automatic gearbox. 

Kia Sonet vs Tata Nexon

The Tata Nexon is another car with a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash rating. It also has a wider rear bench that seats three adults more comfortably and a dual-clutch automatic option on its petrol engine.

But the Sonet's interior fit and finish feel more premium, its touchscreen software is more responsive, and its diesel automatic transmission is a lot smoother than the Nexon's AMT gearbox.

Kia Sonet vs Maruti Suzuki Brezza

The Brezza is powered by a single 1.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine known for its reliability and mild-hybrid fuel economy. Its cabin is more spacious, and you can benefit from Maruti Suzuki’s extensive nationwide network as well.

The Sonet, however, offers far greater powertrain versatility with its punchy 1.0L turbo-petrol and frugal 1.5L diesel engine. The Sonet also has a more modern interior with dual 10.25-inch screens and Level 1 ADAS.

Kia Sonet vs Mahindra XUV 3XO

The Mahindra XUV 3XO offers superior rear legroom, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof and Level 2 ADAS on its higher trims. It’s the fourth car, besides the Brezza, to overshadow the Sonet with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating.

However, keeping safety aside and focusing more on practicality, the Sonet has a larger, more usable 385-litre boot (compared to the 3XO’s smaller cargo hold) and superior diesel fuel economy.

Regardless of the few shortcomings, the Kia Sonet stays relevant in the market with its segment-first tech.

If a buyer wants urban manoeuvrability and premium luxury from the same package, then they can check out what the Kia Sonet has to offer. You get a stylish exterior, a feature-rich interior and an engine-gearbox combination for every kind of driver.

For enthusiastic drivers and long-distance highway commuters, the HTX and GTX+ trims with the 1.0L turbo-petrol (7DCT) or 1.5L diesel (6AT) are the standouts. The diesel automatic in particular delivers a lot of cruising torque and real-world fuel economy exceeding 18 to 20 kmpl. And for city buyers on a budget, the HTE (O) and HTK (O) trims with the 1.2L petrol engine offer high value. They come with 6 airbags, an electric sunroof, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and a rear-view camera under ₹9.00 lakh.

While rear-seat space is tighter than the Tata Nexon and the suspension is on the firmer side over broken city roads (for which the Hyundai Venue is much more favourable), the Sonet compensates well in other terms. Its interior build quality feels sufficient; it offers front ventilated seats, has an immersive Bose sound system and a large 385-litre boot. If you want a modern, reliable compact SUV, this one ticks most of the boxes.
