Nissan Magnite Review

Like many European and American carmakers, it seemed like Nissan was also on its way out of India, on the back of failed models like the Kicks and Evalia. And the carmaker that once sold multiple models in India including the Terrano, Micra, Teana, Sunny, and even the dream forging GT-R, was reduced to selling almost none. That was until the launch of the Magnite, which presently is not only Nissan’s only model on sale in India, but also a very popular one, selling units by the thousands each month. So what exactly makes the Nissan Magnite so special? The price tag is the obvious answer, being one of the cheapest subcompact SUVs on sale in India, undercutting even micro SUVs. But there are other things that contribute to its success too! Let’s take a look at the singular pillar that supports Nissan’s tent in India presently.

Nissan Magnite Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Well-pricedNaturally aspirated engine is sedate
Spacious interiorsPoor NVH levels
Competitive features list for its segmentQuality of materials on the inside isn’t as good as you’d imagine
Sharp and handsome exterior designInterior design isn’t as good as its sister car, the Kiger
Turbo petrol engine delivers brisk performance

Nissan Magnite Exterior Design

The Nissan Magnite has adopted a non-traditional design language just like its sister car, the Renault Kiger. However, where the Kiger’s silhouette is revolutionary, the Magnite has a rather mainstream SUV silhouette. The Magnite’s design possesses many details which make it appear quite unique, sharp, and futuristic. The sleek headlamps, ‘L’ shaped DRLs, imposing hexagonal grille with thick chrome boomerangs, and an interesting bumper cladding complete this design language up front, while the smartly designed alloys do so from the sides. At the back though, the design is a little more conservative, with the interesting bits being a brushed metal-like diffuser insert, and a minimalistically designed hatch.

Nissan Magnite Interiors

Stepping into the cabin of the Nissan Magnite reveals a very thoughtfully laid-out dashboard that has a modern aesthetic. The cabin has some striking design elements, including hexagonal AC vents that are reminiscent of a Lamborghini, and climate control screens which are seamlessly integrated into rotary dials. However, the interior quality leaves room for improvement. Finish choices — especially the exposed steering rack in the driver’s footwell — could be refined. However, the denim-like fabric used on various elbow rests adds a premium touch to an otherwise average cabin.

Nissan Magnite Comfort

The front seats of the Magnite offer a commanding view out, as well as excellent cushioning, ensuring a comfortable driving experience. Rear-seat passengers are not overlooked either, with ample space and good under-thigh support even for taller individuals. The cabin design — with a recessed dash and a low-placed central console — contributes to an expansive feel within the car. The suspension on the other hand isn’t as sophisticated. Especially when travelling solo, the ride tends to be a tad firm and choppy. It does tend to settle down with more people in the cabin.

Nissan Magnite Performance and handling

Powering the Magnite are two 1.0-litre petrol engines — a naturally aspirated unit, and a turbo petrol. As for the naturally aspirated engine, it is the same unit that does duties on the Renault Triber (and obviously the Kiger too). It is offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed “EZ-shift” AMT automatic gearbox, with neither being anything to write home about. The engine is rather low on power, but will be fine for city duties. Triple digit speeds are attainable, but this engine is not meant for the enthusiast, and sounds stressed once you cross 80 km/h.

If highway stints are frequent for you, or if you are an auto enthusiast, it is the 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit that you should opt for. Mated to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic, the engine has ample power to handle a variety of duties. It is the CVT gearbox which is the pick of the two, as it does a great job masking the turbo lag. The Magnite also has good body control, thanks to a slightly stiff suspension, which also makes it a good handler.

Nissan Magnite Safety Features

The Nissan Magnite secured a commendable 4-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test. This recognition immediately positions the compact SUV as a reliable and secure choice for potential buyers. Beyond this notable accolade, the Magnite comes equipped with an array of safety features. The safety package includes four airbags, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. A rear-view camera and parking sensors add a layer of convenience too.

Nissan Magnite Technology and Infotainment

The Nissan Magnite features an 8-inch touchscreen at the centre of its dashboard, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, streamlining smartphone integration. The top-trims further elevate the experience with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, which adapts its graphics based on the selected drive mode. Top trims also include a six speaker JBL  sound system, keyless entry and go, automatic climate control, an air purifier, wireless smartphone charger, and ambient lighting, creating an immersive driving environment.

Is the Nissan Magnite For You?

The Nissan Magnite is one of the most affordable subcompact SUVs in the Indian market, undercutting its twin sibling from the French manufacturer Renault by a margin too. And despite undercutting rivals, the Magnite is still well equipped, has a spacious cabin with comfortable seats, and looks sharp and handsome from the outside. It does have a few things not going for it, like lack of brand value, and poor interior quality, but look beyond that and the Magnite is a proposition that’s good enough to make you put your money on it.
