Electric car sales in India in 2025 — Tata losing its ground?

Tata Motors has been India’s leading EV manufacturer, but it is gradually losing its ground to other players, notably JSW MG Motor India and Mahindra Auto. Looking at an industry-wide spectrum, sales of electric vehicles in India have been on the decline for a few months. Here’s a report on electric car sales in India in 2025, including the latest data for April 2025.

Tata Motors

Tata currently sits on top of the sales charts for electric cars, with a total of 18,497 cars and SUVs sold over the last four months. This includes sales of the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, and Curvv EV. The upcoming Tata Harrier EV will soon join the lineup of electric Tata cars in India.
JSW MG Motor India

MG is catching up swiftly spearheaded by the Windsor EV, with a cumulative sales of 15,437 units over the same period. Other electric MG cars in India that contributed to this figure include the Comet EV and ZS EV.
Mahindra Auto

Mahindra has made its way to the top three with its BE 6 and XEV 9e BEVs. The carmaker has a bunch of new electric SUVs planned for the near future, with the Mahindra XUV700 electric being the first of the lot. The XUV400 also brings in a few units of sales every month.
Hyundai Motor India

Hyundai, with just two EVs in its portfolio, stands at the fourth spot. It has capitalised on the dominance of the Creta brand for its EV sales. The Ioniq 5 brings in double digit sales every month.
BYD India

The world's largest EV manufacturer — BYD — comes out to be India’s fifth largest EV seller. BYD only sells electric cars in India, and its lineup includes the Sealion 7, eMax 7, Atto 3, and Seal sedan.

BMW India

BMW sold 809 electric cars and SUVs across its fairly extensive lineup that includes the BMW i4, i5, i7, iX, and the new iX1 LWB. This was almost double of its closest competitor — Mercedes-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz India

Mercedes-Benz sold a total of 433 electric vehicles over the past four months, averaging at around 100 units every month. The German carmaker has six electric models on sale in India — EQS sedan, EQA, EQB, EQE SUV, EQS SUV, and the G 580 with EQ Technology.
Citroen India

Citroen ranks just behind Mercedes, with just one electric car on sale — the Citroen eC3. The eC3 comes equipped with a 57PS electric motor and a 29.2kWh battery pack, with a claimed range of 246 kilometres, as per MIDC.
Volvo Car India

Volvo India sold 135 electric cars over the same period, averaging at about 30 cars monthly. The Swedish carmaker has two electric cars on sale in India — C40 and XC40 Recharge.
Kia India

Kia India stands at the tenth spot of the best selling EV manufacturers in India. The automaker sold a total of 126 units among the EV6 and the EV9 over the last four months. Kia is expected to soon come up with the Kia Syros EV that will likely give this number a significant boost.

Audi India

Audi stands quite far behind Mercedes-Benz and BMW, with 35 electric cars sold in the last four months. The carmaker has a relatively smaller lineup of electric vehicles in India, which includes the Q8 e-tron and the RS e-tron GT.
Porsche India

Another company from the Volkswagen Group, Porsche India sold 19 electric cars in India during the same period. Electric Porsche cars in India include the Taycan and the Macan EV.
Rolls Royce India

Rolls Royce has been able to sell a whopping 10 units of the Spectre in just four months. For context, each one costs Rs 7.5 crore (ex-showroom) before options and extras!
