Volvo XC40, EX40, & EC40 facelifts revealed — What's changed inside and out

Volvo Cars has updated its 40 series models, including the XC40, EX40 and EC40. The changes cover the exterior design, cabin technology and safety features. Volvo says the updates are aimed at keeping the three models competitive in the coming years.
Akhil Krishnan, Interim lead for the 30 and 40 series at Volvo Cars, said the updates to the design, technology and safety features make these the best versions of the 40 series models so far.
Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40 exterior design updates
All three models get a refreshed front-end design. This includes updated Thor's Hammer Matrix LED headlights, a new grille and redesigned front bumper, bonnet and front wings. At the rear, the XC40 and EX40 get new LED tail-lights, an updated tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper. The EC40 keeps its existing rear design, which helps it look different from the XC40 and EX40.
The XC40 also gets new diamond-cut alloy wheel designs in 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch sizes.
Volvo 40 series interior and technology upgrades
The biggest change inside is the new 11.2-inch central screen. It is larger and sharper than before, while the updated system needs fewer taps to access key functions. This should make it easier for drivers to use the screen while keeping their attention on the road.
The infotainment system also gets Google Gemini, Google's AI assistant. It can help with journey planning, finding places to stop and managing messages while on the move. Volvo has also added smarter storage options and an improved wireless phone charger. There are new upholstery and trim options as well. XC40 buyers can now choose Arianne Cardamom leather seats with Brown Ash wood trim. Black Ash and aluminium trim options are also available, along with updated cabin lighting.
Volvo 40 series safety updates — New sensors and driver assistance
Volvo has added more sensors to the 40 series models. These include new front and corner radars, a new front camera, rear corner radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and updated parking cameras.
The new Door Opening Alert feature warns occupants if opening a door could put a cyclist or another road user at risk. This can be useful in busy city areas where bikes and scooters often pass close to parked cars.
The optional Pilot Assist system has also been updated with lane-change assist. Volvo says the system has been improved to follow the road more smoothly, providing more support on longer drives.
The optional 360-degree camera now also gets a 3D view. This gives the driver a clearer view around the car when parking or making low-speed manoeuvres.
Volvo EX40 and EC40 range figures
The updated EX40 offers up to 357 miles of WLTP range, while the EC40 offers up to 363 miles. Volvo says these are preliminary figures and that actual range can vary based on battery charge, vehicle specification, outdoor and battery temperature, weather, road conditions, driving style and speed.
Volvo's approach to over-the-air updates
The XC40, EX40 and EC40 will continue to receive over-the-air software updates. These updates can add new features and improve existing functions even after the car has been delivered.
