Tata Harrier Vs Tata Safari - Engine, Gearbox, and Performance

Under the hood, the Tata Harrier, as well as the Tata Safari, come equipped with a 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine that churns out 167.6 bhp of power and 350 Nm of maximum torque. This engine is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Currently, there are no petrol engine options available, although the brand is likely to introduce a new turbo petrol unit with the launch of the upcoming facelift iteration in the country.

Built on the same OMEGA platform, derived from Land Rover’s D8 platform, both SUVs boast a compliant suspension setup and are highly regarded for their high-speed dynamics and ride quality. The suspension performs admirably on rough roads, providing a comfortable ride to the occupants of both SUVs.

The steering feedback is great and better than most other rivals, but many enthusiasts might prefer a slightly heavier steering at higher speeds. The performance and driving experience for both SUVs are quite similar, making it difficult to determine a clear winner.

Design And Dimensions

The Tata Harrier’s Impact 2.0 styling marked a significant departure from the conventional design language associated with older Tata cars. It was well appreciated for its aggressive cuts and bold character, showcasing a dominating front fascia with a sleek front grille and large headlamps. This not only provides the Harrier with a strong identity but also makes it visually superior to many of its rivals.

The Safari also follows a similar design language, albeit with a few changes such as a completely revised rear profile, a new front grille design, and a different front bumper. The build quality of both cars is comparable, but the Harrier's sportier appearance is attributed to its sharp rear stance and a well-proportioned, sloping side profile.

Both SUVs share similar styling elements, including machine-cut alloy wheels, projector XENON HID lights, roof rails, LED tail lights, and more.

Warranty, Reliability And Resale

As a standard feature, Tata offers a three-year warranty with all its cars, including the Tata Harrier and the Tata Safari. However, the after-sales support is not the best, with brands like Hyundai and Mahindra known for providing a better service experience. The reliability of both SUVs is comparable, as are the maintenance costs. The Harrier is more popular in the market and might command a better resale value.

Our Verdict

The Tata Harrier and the Tata Safari offer a great package for the buyers. They not only provide strong competition to rivals like the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector, and the Jeep Compass, but they are also loved for their looks and a bold road presence.

When pitted against each other, the Harrier takes the lead with its sporty styling and strong road presence. On the other hand, the Tata Safari attracts those looking for a comfortable 7-seater with a premium cabin and segment-first features like second-row seat ventilation. For those wondering, the Tata Safari justifies its premium price tag and offers a well-loaded package for buyers.
