Top 10 best selling SUVs in India — A mixed bag

The Indian automotive market is dominated by SUVs today. Sedans are slowly disappearing from the portfolios of automakers, and there are fresh body styles such as the coupe SUV coming in. The popularity of SUVs is not restricted to India but is a global phenomena, with companies such as Ferrari and Rolls Royce too coming up with their versions of an ‘SUV’. We aren’t here to discuss these cars here at the moment though. Getting back to the point, here’s a list of the top 10 best selling SUVs in India, including the latest data from April 2025.

Best selling SUVs in India April 2025

Hyundai Creta

The Hyundai Creta was the best selling SUV in India last month, gathering a total sales of 17,016 units. The number of Hyundai Cretas sold every month is greater than the total monthly sales of quite a few mass market car manufacturers in India. 

Maruti Brezza

Selling 16,971 units last month, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza stood at the second spot of the best selling SUVs in India in April 2025. The Brezza comes with a 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine, generating 103PS and 137Nm of torque. There’s also the option of a factory-fitted CNG, further widening the appeal of this SUV.

Mahindra Scorpio

The Scorpio has been the best selling Mahindra SUV in India consistently over the past few months, selling 15,534 units in the last month itself. This includes the sale of both Mahindra Scorpio Classic as well as Mahindra Scorpio N, with the brand selling more diesel Scorpios than petrol ones.

Tata Nexon

Ranking just behind the Mahindra Scorpio, the Tata Nexon gathered 15,457 units of sales during the same period. The Tata Nexon is available in a variety of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, electric, and now CNG too! It is, in fact, the first passenger car in India to get a turbocharged-petrol engine fitted with a CNG kit.

Maruti Fronx

The Maruti Fronx is not just a better-looking Baleno. It proves to be an appealing package that bundles practicality, driveability, as well as a great design. MSIL has been able to sell 14,345 units of the Fronx in April 2025, placing it at the fifth spot.

Tata Punch

The Tata Punch has been pushed to the sixth spot in the list of top selling SUVs in India in April 2025, with a cumulative sales figure of 12,496 units across powertrains and variants. Whether or not it should be called an SUV is a very debatable topic though.

Mahindra Thar

Mahindra has got another contender for this list, establishing its stronghold with the new Mahindra Thar Roxx. The Thar Roxx and the 3-door Thar together brought in 10,703 units of sales in the month of April 2025.

Mahindra Bolero

Overtaking most of its own stablemates like the XUV700 and the XUV 3XO, the Mahindra Bolero takes the eighth spot in this list. The Indian carmaker sold a combined 8,380 units of the Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Bolero Neo, and Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus in April 2025.

Kia Sonet 

Kia sold 8,068 units of its most selling car in India last month, steering ahead of the Seltos and the Syros by handsome margins. The Sonet also ranks just above its sister-car, the Hyundai Venue.

Hyundai Venue

One of Fronx’s key competitors, the Hyundai Venue, gathered 7,953 units of sales last month. While the Creta sits on the top of this list, the Venue occupies the last spot.
