View More2024 MG Cloud EV
The electric mobility sector is experiencing rapid growth, with numerous new players entering the market and many more in the pipeline. Following suit, MG India is expanding its electric vehicle lineup and has recently secured a patent for its third electric car in India, the Cloud EV. Expected to debut in late 2024 or early 2025, the new MG Cloud EV will be among the first vehicles launched in India after MG's merger with JSW Group. It is essentially a rebadged version of the Wuling EV and is anticipated to be priced below Rs 20 lakh. Once launched, it will take on rivals such as the upcoming Kia Carens EV, Tata Nexon EV, and Mahindra XUV400 EV. While the car has been spotted testing on multiple occasions before, the brand has recently patented the Cloud EV in India.
MG Cloud EV: What is it?
Currently regarded as one of the most anticipated upcoming electric cars in India, the MG Cloud EV will be MG’s third electric car for India. It is already on sale under the Wuling brand name in Indonesia and as the Baojun Yunduo in China. With a length of close to 4.3 metres and a wheelbase of 2,700mm, it is slightly smaller than cars like the Kia Carens and sits on a born-electric skateboard platform. The MG Cloud EV will feature a minimal design with clean, flat surfaces, short overhangs, and a wrap-around glasshouse, following the brand’s latest design language for electric cars.
MG Cloud EV features and interiors
The minimalism continues inside, with the dashboard featuring clean horizontal lines and flat surfaces. The large floating infotainment system in the centre stands out and includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Cloud EV will also have a digital instrument cluster, flat-bottom steering, auto climate control, a 360-degree camera, and an ADAS suite. The design advantages of a dedicated electric vehicle provide ample interior space. The front seat backrest can be fully reclined to a 135-degree angle, creating a "sofa mode" for added comfort.
MG Cloud EV range, battery pack and performance
In international markets, the MG Cloud EV is available with two battery pack options: 37.9kWh and 50.6kWh. Both battery packs are paired with a front-axle mounted, permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces 134 hp. The MG Cloud EV range for the smaller battery pack is around 360km (claimed), while the larger battery pack offers a range of up to 460km on a single charge. Further details and specs of the India-bound model are yet to be confirmed.
When will the MG Cloud EV be launched?
As mentioned earlier, the MG Cloud EV price in India is likely to start under Rs 20 lakh. Achieving this price point will depend on high levels of localisation, including the battery pack. At this price, it will compete with the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400, and upcoming midsize EVs such as the Creta EV and Maruti eVX. Reports suggest that the MG Cloud EV is likely to debut during the festive season this year, but it may also be delayed to early 2025.
