Mitsubishi Pajero is officially coming back with a world premiere this autumn
- 1Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the Pajero nameplate is being revived
- 2World premiere scheduled for autumn 2026
- 3New Pajero is built on the Triton pickup truck's ladder frame chassis
Five years after Mitsubishi quietly retired the Pajero from global markets, the nameplate is coming back. The Japanese automaker has now officially confirmed that the all-new Pajero will be unveiled at a world premiere in autumn 2026, and the company's own caption says it all: "The Pajero / Montero is ready to write its next chapter." This is not a rumour or a trademark filing. It is a confirmed debut date and a clear signal that Mitsubishi is treating this as a major moment in its recovery as a brand.
Mitsubishi Pajero exterior — A ladder-frame SUV with Triton roots

The new Pajero will be based on the ladder-frame architecture that underpins the Triton pickup truck, which was recently updated. Mitsubishi has confirmed that the SUV shares the platform and some components with the Triton, but the cabin, front and rear suspension, and body design are being developed specifically for the Pajero. This distinction matters because a shared platform does not mean a badge-engineered product. Mitsubishi appears to be building a dedicated SUV experience on a proven workhorse foundation.
From teaser imagery released by the company, the front of the new Pajero features a connected LED DRL signature that is split in the middle to accommodate the Mitsubishi logo. The LED strips drop down at either end, where the headlamps are likely to be placed. The overall silhouette in the roadmap reveal suggests a boxy, full-size SUV shape, consistent with traditional Pajero proportions. No interior details have been shared yet, but Mitsubishi says the cabin will have its own distinct design rather than being carried over from the Triton.
Mitsubishi Pajero powertrain

Powertrain options will vary by market. Depending on the region, the new Pajero is expected to be available with petrol, diesel, or petrol-electric hybrid drivetrains. The Montero name will be used in place of Pajero in some markets, particularly Europe and North America.
Part of a 13-model push through 2031
The Pajero revival is just one piece of a much larger product offensive Mitsubishi has publicly laid out. The company's roadmap shows 13 new model launches between fiscal year 2026 and fiscal year 2031, spanning a wide range of vehicle types. The lineup includes a Kei wagon, a Kei BEV, a pickup truck, two BEV SUVs, an updated Xpander, a compact SUV, a small SUV, a minivan, and multiple off-road focused products, with the new Pajero and what appears to be a second Pajero-branded model among them.

This roadmap signals a brand that is trying to rebuild momentum with a genuine product strategy rather than a single comeback vehicle. Mitsubishi has been a relatively quiet player in global markets in recent years, but a 13-model rollout over five years is a significant commitment.

New Mitsubishi Pajero carries forward a legendary off-road legacy

The Mitsubishi Pajero was first introduced in 1982 as a recreational vehicle that combined serious off-road capability with passenger-car comfort. Across four generations, it sold more than 3.25 million units in over 170 countries.
The Pajero also built a strong motorsport reputation, winning the Dakar Rally 12 times, including seven consecutive victories. In Japan, it became one of the key vehicles behind the RV boom of the 1990s and later spawned models such as the Pajero Mini, Pajero Junior, and Pajero iO.

That history is a major reason why the Pajero name still holds value today. Known for its durability, off-road capability, and rugged mechanicals, it continues to attract strong interest in used-car markets, including India. Mitsubishi appears keen to preserve that character, with the new model expected to retain a ladder-frame platform and dedicated suspension setup instead of moving to a softer crossover-based design.
The SUV is scheduled to make its global debut in autumn 2026, when Mitsubishi will finally reveal how it plans to bring the Pajero name into a new era.
