Outline

Tesla India has made a significant pricing move this week, reducing the cost of the Model Y base variant by Rs 9 lakh and simultaneously dropping the higher-spec Long Range RWD variant from the India lineup.

The 2026 Model Y Premium RWD is now priced at Rs 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom), down from the previous Rs 59.89 lakh. It is a notable correction that comes barely a month after Tesla launched the larger Model Y L in India, and the timing suggests Tesla is actively working to define clearer positioning for both products in what is still an early-stage market for the brand.

What changed in the Tesla Model Y lineup

Up until recently, the Model Y in India was available in two variants: the Premium RWD and the Premium Long Range RWD, the latter priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. When Tesla launched the Model Y L Premium AWD at Rs 61.99 lakh last month, the Long Range RWD found itself in a strange spot. It was slower, had less range, offered fewer features, and carried fewer seats, yet cost more than the Model Y L.

That inconsistency has now been resolved. The Long Range RWD has been discontinued, and the base Premium RWD has received a meaningful price cut to clearly separate the two remaining products in the range.

The Model Y lineup in India now stands as follows: the Premium RWD at Rs 50.89 lakh and the Model Y L Premium AWD at Rs 61.99 lakh, with a gap of Rs 11.10 lakh between them. Buyers now have a straightforward choice between a more accessible, single-motor entry point and a long-wheelbase, six-seat, dual-motor flagship.

What the 2026 Model Y Premium RWD offers

Tesla has tagged this as a new 2026 variant and has made a few updates alongside the price change. The interior now comes in an all-black theme with a fully blacked-out headliner and premium trim, which Tesla says creates a more immersive driving environment. A Zen Grey interior is offered as an optional upgrade for those who want a different look.

On the specification front, the Premium RWD delivers a promised range of 500 km, a 16-inch front touchscreen, seating for five adults, power folding rear seats, and a performance figure of 0-100 km/h in under 5.9 seconds. Tesla is offering this variant with a down payment of Rs 6 lakh and a monthly EMI option starting at around Rs 3.99 lakh, framing it as accessible to mid-size SUV and sedan buyers looking to step into a premium EV. Deliveries are expected to begin in July 2026.

Tesla's pitch to Indian buyers

In the press material accompanying this price change, Tesla made a specific claim: that Model Y Premium RWD buyers can achieve savings of around Rs 2 lakh per month in fuel and maintenance costs compared to a petrol vehicle. The effective ownership cost framing of roughly Rs 19,990 per month is clearly aimed at widening the conversation beyond the sticker price. Whether or not those numbers hold up in real-world Indian conditions will be scrutinised closely by buyers, but the intent is clear. Tesla is trying to make the cost-of-ownership argument rather than competing purely on price.

The company currently operates four dealerships across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Gurugram, and has signalled continued investment in retail coverage and public charging infrastructure. Home charging is included with the purchase.

What this means for the Indian EV market

2025 Tesla Model Y L revealed

A Tesla at under Rs 51 lakh is still far from mass-market territory in India, but it is a materially different proposition from where the brand sat at Rs 67 lakh. The Model Y now has a more defensible price point against premium EV rivals. The restructured lineup also removes an internal anomaly that was confusing for buyers, which can only help Tesla close more sales in the short term.
