Tata Altroz EV launch plan revived — Catch new details inside
- 1Tata Altroz EV is still in the pipeline
- 2Battery packaging issues caused the delay in launch
- 3Likely to share the Acti.ev platform with the Punch EV
Among all the new Tata cars that have been circling around in the media, we lost track of the electric premium hatchback—the Altroz EV. Showcased way back in 2019 as a concept, the Altroz EV has not received the clout in the age of electric SUVs, and SUVs in general. However, a new media report reveals that the Altroz EV is still in the works and very much on track of getting launched in the Indian market. Let’s talk about the Tata Altroz EV launch plan and why it has taken so long.
Tata Altroz EV — What caused so much delay?
Showcased first as a concept back in 2019, the Altroz EV was then showcased in its pre-production form at the 2020 Auto Expo, which generally is the closest to the market launch. However, since 2020, Tata Motors didn’t give any details about its launch and it got lost in the sea of updates like the Nexon EV and even new introductions like the Punch EV and Curvv EV.

Tata Motors clearly gave preference to the SUV bodystyle of the Punch EV over the Altroz EV hatchback, not because of the market dynamics but also due to the complexity of an electric hatchback. Now you must question, how is it a big deal when the Tiago EV is also available? Well, the Tiago EV sits on a reworked ICE platform of the Tiago, where its batteries are stuffed wherever space could be carved out. The Altroz EV, on the other hand, is said to position the batteries under the floor. In the SUV bodystyle of the Punch EV, stuffing batteries under the floor is not that big a challenge, thanks to the margin of ground clearance to work with.

The Altroz EV—by the virtue of being a premium hatchback—doesn’t have enough ground clearance. Hence, it has turned out to be a complex task, which is to place the batteries efficiently without compromising much on the ground clearance. Reports revealed that the placement of batteries under the floor reduced the Altroz EV ground clearance by 20mm, bringing it down to 145mm, which is clearly not enough for Indian driving conditions.
Tata Altroz EV to share platform with Punch EV
Since the first showcase of the Altroz EV, Tata Motors has developed the new Acti.ev platform, which enables new possibilities and advancements over the ICE-derived EV platforms. The Altroz EV is likely to share the Acti.ev platform with the Punch EV, helping to curb its packaging issues. We expect the Altroz EV to share its battery packs and motor with the Punch EV, which currently comes in two choices—25kWh with 82PS and 35kWh with 123PS.

Tata Altroz EV launch timeline
The Tata Altroz EV was earlier said to be launched this year, after that of the Harrier EV and Sierra EV. While the Harrier EV has just been launched in the Indian market, the Tata Sierra EV launch is still sometime away, further delaying the launch of the Altroz EV. Looking at the launch timeline of other Tata products, we expect the Tata Altroz EV launch to fall in early 2026.
