Mahindra Thar Roxx SUV - Go-Anywhere 5-Door SUV
The Thar Roxx is a re-conceptualisation of the traditional Thar. Built on the new M_GLYDE platform, it keeps the ladder-frame toughness, but adds meaningful family usability with rear doors, a longer wheelbase, and a much bigger boot. The design purpose of Mahindra is obvious: to deliver an emotional, go-anywhere Thar character and address the real-life issues that restricted the everyday functionality of the three-door.
The Roxx Thar brings a new platform with refinement. Watts-link rear suspension, Hydraulic Rebound Stoppers, and improved NVH make the Roxx a steadier highway cruiser than its predecessor. At the same time, it preserves true off-road elements (high ground clearance, strong approach/departure angles, and the 4XPLOR system). In short, the Thar Roxx SUV is aimed at buyers who want an authentic off-roader that can double as a primary family car rather than a weekend ride.
Read below to understand the ex-showroom price range, and the Thar Roxx price on-road will vary based on location-specific quotes and offers. Also note that the government announced price cuts of up to ₹1.33 lakh since 22 September 2025.

These sample prices represent the range between trims, drivetrains, and equipment packages from practical RWD to the fully-equipped 4x4 top model. For the full price list, you may refer to the Mahindra Thar Roxx variant page. Get in touch with your local dealers to understand the Thar Roxx on-road price for the specific model you are eyeing.
The Thar Roxx is available in two distinct engines, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol (1997 cc) and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel (2184 cc). They both come with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic option, and the 4x4 is only available with diesel.
2.0-litre mStallion Petrol (1,997 cc): 119-130 kW @ 5000 rpm, 330-380 Nm @ 1500-3000 rpm
This petrol engine is surprisingly responsive for such a large body. On the road, it is brisk off the line, and the automatic trims add convenience for everyday drives. Anticipate the urban economy to be modest and actual numbers to be lower than the claimed ones. On highways, it will cruise smoothly and attain triple-digit speeds with ease. Select the petrol in case you desire something more active and less complicated to use in the city and on the weekends.
2.2-litre mHawk Diesel (2,184 cc): 111.9-128.6 kW @ 3500-3750 rpm, 330-400 Nm @ 1500-3000 rpm
The diesel is the everyday workhorse. It provides high-end torque in the low-end that conceals the weight of the Thar Roxx, making it effortless to overtake in the city and climb the hills. It is relaxed and economical on long routes compared to the size of the vehicle, and highway performance/carrying capacity are significantly superior to petrol. Diesel is the reasonable choice among buyers who travel long distances and want the 4x4 option for off-roading.
Driving Character Notes
Both engines are designed for strong real-world performance. With the MGLYDE platform, the Roxx rides and steers much more calmly than the 3-door Thar. The rear end of the Watts linkage greatly decreases the lateral sway, and long-distance highway travel remains comfortable. The Roxx is now a true mile-muncher. That said, the low-speed ride remains firmer than the softer monocoque SUVs due to the inherent body-on-frame rigidity.
The Thar Roxx variant lineup is divided into the MX and AX series with rising levels of equipment.
MX1: Gets the essentials right with six airbags, basic safety electronics, power windows, push-button start, and a touchscreen. It offers all the practicality of the Thar Roxx 5-door without stretching the budget.
MX3: Adds a sharper HD touchscreen, a rear camera, and an auto-dimming IRVM. Even gets an automatic transmission option, thereby becoming the cheapest Mahindra Thar Roxx automatic model.
MX5: Introduces LED DRLs, projector fog lamps, an 18-inch wheel setup, and a single-pane sunroof.
AX3L: This trim brings 10.25-inch digital cluster, automatic climate control, auto wipers/headlamps, and Level-2 ADAS (on diesel).
AX5L: Combines the aesthetic upgrades of MX5 with the technology of AX3L.
AX7L: This is the top trim with a 360° camera, Harman Kardon audio with Dolby Atmos, powered and ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, and the widest feature spread in the lineup. Best suited for buyers who want their Mahindra Thar Roxx fully loaded, both as a family SUV and a lifestyle vehicle.
The Thar Roxx looks like an extension of the traditional Thar shape to a five-door shape without losing its core identity. The rigid metal roof improves NVH levels, and the optional panoramic sunroof improves the overall cabin feel. The major visual indicators are a distinctive six-slot grille, C-shaped DRLs, projector LED headlamps, and massive 19-inch alloys with all-terrain rubber wrappings. The classic Defender/Jeep-style utility is retained with a full-metal roof and side-opening tailgate, including a spare wheel. The presence of a longer wheelbase and wider track enhances stance and on-road stability, whereas the side steps and 90-degree opening rear door facilitate ingress and egress.
The 3-door Thar was always about utility, but the Thar Roxx delivers with a more refined approach. Soft leatherette dash tops, contrast stitching, and better trim quality lift the feel. Seating is now more family-friendly, the 60:40 reclining rear bench has good under-thigh support, and can comfortably accommodate two adults; some taller passengers might find headroom limited at nearly 6ft. Storage space is pretty adequate as well with deep door pockets, a cooled glovebox, a massive wireless charging tray, and practical cubbies.
The tech is also impressive as you get a 10.25-inch infotainment system with AdrenoX, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos on AX7L. Lastly, you get practical features like a panoramic sunroof, a powered driver’s seat, and a 360-degree camera that make the Thar Roxx an actual family-friendly SUV.
The Thar Roxx has a strong safety foundation: you get six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, traction control, hill-hold and hill-descent control, rear parking sensors, and three-point seat belts. Higher trims include tyre-pressure monitoring, front parking sensors, 360-degree camera, auto-dimming IRVM, and Level-2 ADAS (forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go). The Roxx was also crash-tested by Bharat NCAP, where it achieved 5-star adult and child occupant protection rating. For families, the package incorporates both active and passive systems that are relevant both in the city and in rougher environments.
The Thar Roxx sits between hardcore off-roaders and the mainstream family SUVs. Here is how it compares with the closest rivals.
Force Gurkha 5-door
Enthusiasts admire the Force Gurkha. It has tougher off-road geometry and old-school manual diff-locks, which are popular with expedition-oriented customers. Select the Gurkha if you prefer remote-trail reliability, and select the Thar Roxx if you desire better cabin quality, features, and everyday usability.
Mahindra Scorpio-N
The Mahindra Scorpio-N is the in-house comfort rival. It rides softer, seats up to seven, and suits taller occupants better. Choose the Scorpio-N if you want a third row and a very family-friendly SUV with 4x4. Go for the Thar Roxx if you want the classic Thar stance, style, and better off-road capability.
Comparing it to more road-oriented SUVs such as the Safari, the Thar Roxx may feel firmer on rough roads. Yet, it has genuine 4x4 components, a more comprehensive feature list for rougher trails, and a personality that none of those crossovers can replicate.
Here is a quick look at where the Roxx shines and where it asks for compromises.
| Pros | Cons |
| Strong presence and classic boxy styling with modern touches. | The ride over broken surfaces can be firm and toss occupants. |
| Five-door practicality: roomy boot, better rear access, and metal roof insulation. | Petrol variants have lower fuel efficiency. |
| Rich features: panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon + Dolby Atmos (AX7L), 10.25" screens. | Some ergonomic niggles: front thigh support and rear centre cushion alignment. |
| Capable off-roader; diesel 4x4 available. | |
| Comprehensive safety kit: six airbags, ADAS, and 5/5 Bharat NCAP rating. |
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is a unique proposition: it retains the adventurous genes of the Thar and introduces the space, comfort, and technology that a family requires. For buyers who desire a characterful SUV that will not only climb tracks but also carry a family and still compete in traffic, the Thar Roxx price and options (RWD/4WD, petrol/diesel, manual/AT) make it an attractive option. The top AX7L delivers a genuinely impressive feature count with Dolby Atmos, a 360° camera, and ventilated seats, which lifts daily usability.
If your daily commutes are predominantly on poor local roads, and passenger comfort is the paramount factor, the firm ride of the Roxx on broken roads is a real consideration. But for most buyers seeking a practical, fun, and well-equipped five-door SUV that doesn’t lose off-road soul, the Mahindra Thar Roxx on-road price represents a strong, honest value. You get a true weekend warrior that doubles as a capable family vehicle. Many trims are available for booking, so consider Thar Roxx booking early in case a particular configuration is important to you.
