Outline

Things are moving faster than many expected for the Kia Sorento in India. A fresh image circulating on social media, first shared by Twitter user Aditya, shows what appears to be the bodyshell of the upcoming Kia Sorento being transported on a flatbed truck somewhere in India.

The vehicle is still in its BIW or Body In White stage, which means it is the bare structural shell with doors, tailgate, and bonnet spot-welded onto the exoskeleton but before any paint or interior fitment. This kind of sighting is significant because it suggests active pre-production work is underway in the country.

What the Kia Sorento bodyshell sighting tells us

A body shell being moved on a flatbed inside India is not typical of how CBU (Completely Built-Up) imports work. When a car is brought in as a fully built unit, it arrives at a port ready to be driven off a carrier. A bare bodyshell being transported locally is, instead, often associated with CKD (Completely Knocked Down) or SKD (Semi Knocked Down) assembly, where parts arrive from abroad and are assembled locally. This would help Kia keep the Sorento's pricing competitive in India, which is a crucial factor in a segment already occupied by some well-established and value-oriented options.

Test mule sightings of the Kia Sorento had already been reported on Indian roads before this latest development, and prior testing footage had revealed details like a rotary gear selector and 19-inch alloy wheels, both consistent with the global hybrid variant.

Kia Sorento powertrain expectations

The Kia Sorento is expected to launch in India with a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid powertrain. Globally, this setup produces around 227 hp and over 350 Nm by combining a petrol engine with an electric motor. Kia is likely to focus on the hybrid version for India instead of diesel, mainly due to the rising demand for more fuel-efficient premium SUVs. A 6-speed automatic gearbox is expected to be offered. A diesel variant could also arrive later, possibly around 2027.

While the India-spec power and torque figures are not officially confirmed yet, the hybrid setup is expected to deliver noticeably better fuel efficiency than similarly sized petrol-only SUVs, which could be a major advantage given current fuel prices.

Where the Sorento fits in the market

Kia Sorento

If launched, the Kia Sorento will sit above the Seltos and become Kia’s flagship petrol and hybrid SUV in India. It is expected to compete with premium SUVs like the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line, Skoda Kodiaq, Toyota Fortuner, and the MG Majestor. Expected pricing could range between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom).

What makes the Sorento especially interesting is that it is expected to be one of the first strong hybrid SUVs in the Rs 30-40 lakh segment in India. Hyundai is also expected to launch a premium 7-seater hybrid SUV in a similar segment, which could create an interesting rivalry between the two brands.

Kia Sorento India launch

Based on the current pace of testing and the bodyshell sighting, a late 2026 launch is possible, though some reports point to Q1 2027 as a more likely window. Kia has not made an official announcement yet, but the fact that development activity is clearly ramping up in India suggests the brand is targeting a launch within the current financial year at the latest. Production is expected to happen at Kia's facility in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.
