Outline

MG has officially replaced the Gloster with the Majestor as its flagship body-on-frame SUV in India. The Gloster was a familiar nameplate over the past several years, but the Majestor arrives as a bigger, more feature-loaded step-up. With that step-up, though, comes a higher price tag. So how much more are you paying, and is it justified?

The table below tells the most important part of the story:

The Majestor's base price has not yet been announced for the Sharp RWD variant, so a full comparison at the entry level is still pending. But from the Savvy variants, the premium over the Gloster ranges from Rs 1.19 lakh at the RWD level to Rs 2.50 lakh on the 4WD. That is not a massive difference given how much more the Majestor brings in terms of size, features and positioning.

What does the MG Majestor add over the Gloster?

The most obvious change is sheer size. The Majestor measures 5,046mm in length, 2,016mm in width, and 1,876mm in height, riding on a 2,950mm wheelbase. The Gloster, by comparison, measures 4,985mm in length and 1,926mm in width, making the Majestor noticeably bigger in every dimension. This puts it in a genuinely different tier in terms of road presence and interior space.

On the technology front, the Majestor moves things up considerably. It gets dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker JBL surround sound system, dual wireless chargers, 3-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, 64-colour ambient lighting, a 220V power outlet, and 75+ connected car features. The Gloster also had a strong feature set, but the Majestor clearly raises the bar on the infotainment and comfort front.

Safety has also been updated. MG has equipped the Majestor with a Level 2 ADAS suite featuring assisted steering, braking and acceleration functions, along with ESP, ABS, EBD, traction control, roll movement intervention and a 360-degree HD camera. The Gloster offered Level 1 ADAS on its higher variants, so this is a meaningful upgrade.

The 4WD system on the Majestor also gets a step up. Special attention has been given to its 4WD system, with a segment-first triple differential lock and a crawl system dubbed M-Crawl by MG, that automatically manages throttle and braking at low speeds, freeing the driver to only provide steering inputs.

MG Majestor vs Gloster — Same engine, different SUV

Both the Gloster and the Majestor share the same 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. On the Gloster's 4WD variant, this engine produces 215.5PS and 478.5Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Majestor carries forward the same powertrain, so there is no performance advantage or disadvantage here. The upgrade is about everything else around the engine.

Is the Majestor worth the extra money?

For buyers looking at a new SUV today, the bigger question is not really Majestor versus Gloster, but whether the MG Majestor justifies its higher price. Considering the premium over the MG Gloster ranges from Rs 1.19 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh, the Majestor does offer noticeably more in terms of size, technology, and safety features.

At the same time, the Gloster is expected to continue alongside it for now, which could make it a better value choice for buyers who do not need all the extra features the Majestor brings.
