The battle between petrol and diesel has been going on ever since they were first introduced into the world. We have already discussed the upcoming petrol cars and now we turn our attention to the diesel models that are set to launch in India in 2020 and 2021. Diesel engines, unlike petrol, are more advanced and have been growing in popularity over the years. While diesel initially had some disadvantages like being excessively loud or polluting the air with fine particles of soot, those problems are now long gone and car manufacturers are designing their diesel engines to compete closely to their petrol counterparts. Manufacturers now sell cars with diesel engines equally or even more than their petrol counterparts in India. So, let’s see what the future holds for Indian car buyers.

In an industry that is consumed by a sudden trend of SUV enthusiasm, the 2020 Volvo S60 is more a breath of fresh air that one might think. Although this sedan is based on the same platform as its 7-seater compatriot – the XC90, the new S60 offers the old-school customer so much more. For starters, the car is powered only by petrol engines and will not use diesel as an option anytime soon. There are hybrid options though, that could find the interest of some buyers. Currently, in the UK, Volvo offers the 2020 S60 in a total of 5 variants – all of which will now house a BSVI-compliant 2.0L 4-cylinder Turbo-petrol engine. The T4 and T5 variants will offer 190bhp and 250bhp respectively as well as automatic transmission and Front-Wheel-Drive. A 306bhp All-Wheel-Drive T6 engine is also available while a couple of T8 petrol and plug-in hybrid engines offering 400bhp complete the list. How many of these variants will actually make it to India is unknown but we can at least expect the T4 and T5 models to feature this year. While Volvo is a company that has been releasing cars regularly since 2014, most of the models feature similar exteriors as well as interiors and that trend carried over to the 2020 S60 as well. A touchscreen panel is fitted into the center console in portrait style which is easy to use and helps control the car settings quicker. In terms of audio, the car houses a Bowers & Wilkins stereo setup that provides top-quality sound. The rest of the interiors include leather-clad seats, a leather steering wheel, digital dashboard and instrument cluster, air condition vents, and power windows among others.

Back in 2017, Fiat replaced the Punto with the new Argo hatchback but was only targeted to the Brazilian market. Fast-forward to 2020 and Fiat are gearing up to launch the would-be replacement of the Linea and they care calling it the Cronos. While Fiat initially only gave us a peek of the exterior of the car at first, they have now released some interior images before the car is launched in South America. Through the images, we can clearly see that the Cronos is designed almost exactly like the Argo with a few visible changes. The dashboard on the Cronos is far more refined than the Argo’s and is now missing the contrasting red or silver band that ran across the Argo. Apart from that, we don’t know much about the Cronos including the engine options. While we can expect Fiat to launch the Cronos in India sometime in the future, we have not heard any official announcement from the company, yet. Given the fact that Fiat is a company that has been doing quite well in India, we have no reason to believe that the sedan will not make it to Indian shores.

Given the fact that they share so much, the Baojun 510 is designed almost identically to the Hector, however, it is a little smaller in size. Powering the Baojun 510 will be a 1.5L In-Line S-TEC III petrol engine that will generate 115Ps of power and 146Nm of torque. The SUV will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic gearbox as an option. If technology is what you’re after, MG supplies a lot and the Baojun 510 features it with style. There is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, automatic climate control, push-button ignition, auto cruise, keyless entry, and a semi-open panoramic sunroof.

The upcoming Volvo V60 Cross Country is essentially the popular V60 with a few tweaks and touch-ups. In terms of looks, the V60 Cross Country has the same grille found on the regular V60 with the same LED headlamps placed on either side of it. The front bumper remains the same as well with large air dams carved into the plastic in front. In the rear, the V60 Cross Country features the same taillights and exhaust tips as is seen on the standard V60 car. The only visible difference on the outside of the V60 Cross Country is the charcoal plastic wheel arches. Apart from that, the car also has a 60mm ground clearance advantage from its original variant. Even on the inside, the V60 Cross Country looks practically identical to the V60 and comes with a touchscreen console that is remarkably easy to use. The leather seats in front are very comfortable and with the adjustable steering wheel, there is no problem in finding a suitable driving position. Powering the car is a BSVI-compliant 2.0L Twin-Turbocharged D4 diesel engine that is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and offers an impressive 187bhp. Although there is no other engine option at the moment, Volvo has said that a BSVI-compliant 2.0L T5 petrol engine will be made available in the coming months which will produce 247bhp. While the standard V60 was a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate, the BMW 3 Series Estate, and the Audi A4 Estate, the V60 Cross Country’s has only one competitor currently – the Audi A4 Allroad. Priced at about 45.0 lakhs and offering some exciting features, the V60 Cross Country could be one of the biggest SUV options in the country and a simple used car valuation tool can help you own the model easily.

While the upcoming Sportage is in its fourth generation from KIA, the model is yet to make its way to India. Fortunately though, we believe that the latest model will make its way over given the fact that the SUV segment is truly flourishing in the country. Also, the KIA Seltos has been doing extremely well in India and is growing in popularity every day. This might push KIA to launch the Sportage in the country as well. While there isn’t a lot of information around the Sportage right now, we expect the SUV to be similar to what is offered on the Hyundai Tucson and will immediately compete with the likes of the Tucson, Mahindra XUV500 and the Jeep Compass. Definitely considered as one of the most anticipated cars of the year, the Hyundai Santa Fe 2022 SUV is said to come with a plethora of features that will take “customized driving” to a whole new level. The company has announced that the Santa Fe will be the first car from them to implement a fingerprint sensor technology. This technology will not only give owners keyless entry, it will also be used to start the car and turn off the ignition with just a touch. Once registered, the owner (or other registered users) will get the opportunity to customize their driving experience by automatically adjusting the seats, rear view and side view mirrors, and even the steering wheel by placing their finger on the scanner. Powering the Santa Fe will most likely be a 2.2L diesel engine that is capable of generating 200Ps of power and 440Nm of torque. In the transmission department, the Santa Fe could end up with an 8-speed automatic as well as an H-TRAC All-Wheel-Drive option too. Some of the features noted on the Santa Fe include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless charging for compatible devices, and 8-inch heads-up displays for all-round entertainment.
