Outline

If you drive a CNG vehicle in Delhi or nearby NCR cities, the last two weeks have not been easy. Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has increased CNG prices four times since May 15, 2026. The latest hike of Rs 2 per kg came into effect at 6 am on May 26. With this, CNG in Delhi now costs Rs 83.09 per kg, up from Rs 78.09 just 11 days ago. Overall, prices have gone up by Rs 5 per kg in less than two weeks.

How the hikes unfolded

IGL hikes CNG price

The price hikes came one after another in a very short span. IGL first increased prices by Rs 2 per kg on May 15, saying input gas costs had gone up and the rupee had weakened against the US dollar. Another Rs 1 per kg hike followed on May 17, then another Re 1 on May 23. The latest Rs 2 per kg increase came on May 26. Each revision was announced on the same morning it became effective, giving consumers very little time to adjust.

IGL says the hikes are linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has disrupted global energy supply routes, especially around the Strait of Hormuz. This has pushed up international LNG prices. A weaker rupee has added more pressure on import costs. Even after the hikes, IGL says CNG still remains up to 45% cheaper than petrol and diesel at current prices.

Impact on commuters and transport businesses

For private car owners, four hikes in 11 days is frustrating enough. But commercial users are feeling the impact even more. Taxi drivers, auto operators, school buses, and logistics fleets depend on CNG mainly because it is cheaper to run than petrol or diesel. With repeated hikes, operating costs have increased sharply while fares have stayed mostly the same.

Several taxi unions and transport groups in Delhi-NCR have already raised concerns and demanded either a rollback in prices or permission to increase fares. Their concern is understandable because the biggest advantage of CNG has always been lower running costs. As that gap narrows, running commercial CNG vehicles becomes less financially attractive.

Why IGL stocks went up

IGL hikes CNG price

Investors reacted positively to the price hikes. On May 26, IGL shares rose nearly 6% on the BSE. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), which supplies CNG in Mumbai, also saw its stock rise by around 3%, even though it had not announced a fresh price hike at that time.

Markets usually respond positively when gas distributors pass higher costs on to customers because it helps protect company margins. The rise in MGL shares also suggests investors expect Mumbai prices to increase further. Earlier this month, MGL had already raised Mumbai CNG prices to Rs 84 per kg.

What this means going forward

Future price hikes will largely depend on how the West Asia situation develops. The ongoing conflict has already affected global energy markets, and city gas companies in India are operating under pressure. IGL has said these hikes only partially cover rising costs, which means prices could increase again if international gas prices stay high or the rupee weakens further.

For now, CNG users, especially commercial fleet operators, may need to stay alert for more revisions in the coming weeks.
