| Mahindra | 4.7% | XUV500 (29.4%), XUV300 (10.8%) and Scorpio (10.4%) |
1. Maruti Suzuki – 33.2% Market Share
Maruti Suzuki accounts for 33.2% of all used cars sold, roughly one in every three. Its strength lies in breadth: buyers choose from a long list of dependable models rather than a single hero car. The Swift is the best-selling used car in India overall, at 4.8% of all used cars sold, followed by the Wagon R 1.0 at 3.4% and the Swift Dzire at 2.7%.
Petrol is the most common fuel among used Maruti Suzuki cars at 62%, followed by diesel at 19.8%, while CNG sits third at 17.2%, which means the gap between diesel and CNG isn’t wide and continues to narrow. Low running costs and easily available spare parts keep these cars easy to own and easy to resell. See the top-selling used Maruti Suzuki cars for more.
2. Hyundai – 21.6% Market Share
Hyundai holds second place with a 21.6% share, built on a balance of premium features and competitive pricing. The i10 leads with 15.4% of the brand’s used sales, followed by the Grand i10 at 12.5%. The Creta, at 9.7%, is the only SUV in Hyundai’s top three, a sign that buyers are extending the trust they place in Hyundai’s hatchbacks to its SUV.
Petrol is the leading fuel among used Hyundai cars at a 69.3% share, diesel second at 18.4%, CNG third at 11.4%, and LPG at last with a 0.9% share. The i10 has aged well, making up 3.3% of all used cars sold, and 92% of its buyers choose the manual. Read the top-selling used Hyundai cars for a model-wise view.
3. Honda – 8.2% Market Share
Honda takes third place with an 8.2% share, and it’s the most concentrated brand on the list. The City accounts for 41.1% of Honda’s used sales, the Amaze for 22.1% and the Jazz for 9.6%.
The City is the best-selling used sedan in India, at 3.4% of all used cars sold, and its comfortable, refined drive keeps drawing buyers who want more space than a hatchback offers. The Amaze brings the same Honda reputation to a compact sedan, while the Jazz is the brand’s hatchback. Browse used sedan cars or the full range of used Honda cars.
4. Tata – 7.8% Market Share
Tata holds a 7.8% share, with demand split between hatchbacks and compact SUVs. The Tiago leads at 23.1% of its used sales, followed by the Nexon at 20.7% and the Altroz at 9.1%.
The Nexon, launched in 2017, ranks third among used SUVs with a 7.5% share, reflecting the growing appetite for compact SUVs and Tata’s focus on safety and build quality. The Altroz, a newer model, has made it into the brand’s top three, which suggests that more recent Tata cars are now reaching the used market. Explore used Tata cars to see what’s available.
5. Mahindra – 4.7% Market Share
Mahindra joins the list with a 4.7% share, and its demand is built almost entirely on SUVs. The XUV500 leads at 29.4% of its used sales, followed by the XUV300 at 10.8% and the Scorpio at 10.4%.
Its overall share understates its strength in the SUV segment, where Mahindra holds the largest brand-level share of used SUV sales. Diesel dominates its used SUVs, and the XUV500, discontinued in 2021 in favour of the XUV700, still attracts buyers who want a proven seven-seater at a lower price than a comparable new SUV. The Bottom Line
Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda, Tata and Mahindra led India’s used car market in 2026, with hatchbacks driving most sales and sedans and SUVs filling out the rest. Maruti Suzuki wins on breadth, Hyundai on features and price, Honda on one standout sedan, Tata on safety-focused hatchbacks and SUVs, and Mahindra on rugged, diesel-powered SUVs.
What ties them together is trust in reliability, service reach and resale value. As the market grows, checking a car’s ownership history and fair price before you buy remains the surest way to get long-term value.
