Rule 15 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 defines the procedure to conduct driving tests. A Motor Vehicle Inspector from the concerned RTO acts as the invigilator of the test and he passes or fails an applicant based on his or her performance in the test. The applicant needs to take his own vehicle for the test. This vehicle should be of the same class as the one for which the applicant needs a DL. One can also use a vehicle of the motor driving school in case he doesn’t own a required vehicle.
For the driving licence test for a 2 and a 3 wheeler, the applicant is asked to ride inside a border on an imaginary pattern of figure ‘8’ without touching his feet on the ground. If the invigilator is satisfied, the applicant is asked to ride on the road and he is judged based on how well he can control the vehicle in real-world conditions.
The test for driving licence for a 4-wheeler remains the same across the country. In this test, the applicant drives on a specially prepared track where he needs to use the vehicle without coming in contact with any of the pillars. Once the performs to the satisfaction of the invigilator, he is asked to drive on a public road. The invigilator marks the applicant pass or fail based on his performance. If failed, the applicant can apply for a re-test after 7 days on payment of a nominal fee.
