Tata Punch

The Tata Punch has three powertrain choices, and each one suits a different type of buyer.

1.2L Petrol (NA)

The naturally aspirated 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine is the sensible choice for buyers who mainly drive in the city. It produces 88 PS and 115 Nm and can be paired with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT.

For everyday traffic, the engine is adequate and predictable. However, it does not have the punch of the turbo-petrol when the car is loaded or when a driver needs to accelerate quickly on a highway. Buyers who regularly drive long distances should consider the turbo before choosing the NA petrol.

1.2L Turbo-Petrol

The new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol is the performance-oriented engine in the Punch range. It produces about 120 PS and 170 Nm and comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The additional torque makes the turbo-Punch more responsive during acceleration and highway overtakes. It is the better choice for buyers who enjoy driving or regularly take their Punch out on highways. The trade-off is that the turbo is positioned higher in the price range and is not offered with an automatic gearbox.

Tata Punch CNG

Tata Punch CNG makes sense for buyers with high daily running, particularly those who spend a lot of time driving in the city. The CNG powertrain prioritises running-cost efficiency over outright performance.

The 2026 Punch also gets a CNG-AMT combination, giving buyers the option of two-pedal driving without moving to petrol. Tata's twin-cylinder CNG layout helps retain usable luggage space, which has been one of the practical strengths of the Punch iCNG from the beginning.

The Punch's suspension is another useful attribute for Indian driving conditions. It handles broken surfaces and speed breakers with confidence, while the compact dimensions make the car relatively easy to place in traffic. The AMT is best suited to relaxed driving; it is not as smooth or immediate as a conventional torque-converter or dual-clutch automatic.

The Tata Punch range is spread across several trim levels, with equipment increasing as you move towards the higher variants.

• Smart: The entry point for buyers who want the Punch's basic package at the lowest possible price.
• Pure / Pure+: Better suited to buyers who want additional convenience and infotainment features without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Pure+ S / Adventure / Adventure S: These variants offer a stronger mix of equipment and are worth considering for buyers who want more than the basic Punch package.

• Accomplished / Accomplished+ S: The higher variants add premium features and are aimed at buyers who want the Punch with most of the available equipment.

   

Which Tata Punch Variants Should You Buy

For most buyers, the mid-range variants are likely to offer the best balance between price and equipment. The lower variants make sense when purchase price is the priority, while the higher trims are worth considering if features such as a sunroof, 360-degree camera and additional convenience equipment matter to you.

The facelifted Tata Punch carries a more modern version of the original SUV-inspired design. Its styling includes split LED headlamps, a revised front end, squared-off wheel arches and black cladding. The design takes inspiration from Tata's newer SUV family, including the Punch.ev.

The upright body and high seating position give the Punch a more substantial appearance than its dimensions suggest. At the same time, its compact footprint remains useful in crowded city streets and tight parking spaces.

The Tata Punch ground clearance is another practical advantage. The 2026 model has 193 mm of ground clearance according to Tata's current product information.  This helps when dealing with speed breakers and uneven roads, although the Punch remains primarily a road-focused urban SUV rather than an off-road vehicle.

Tata Punch colours: The Punch is offered in a range of single-tone and dual-tone exterior finishes, with availability depending on the variant. Buyers should check the current colour list before booking because colour availability can change with variants and model updates.

The Tata Punch has a high seating position and large windows that give the cabin a relatively airy feel. The front seats offer a good driving position, while the rear bench is more comfortable for two adults on longer journeys. Three adults can fit in the rear for shorter trips, but the cabin is not especially wide.

The Punch offers 366 litres of boot space in its petrol version. Tata's twin-cylinder CNG arrangement is designed to reduce the boot-space compromise normally associated with a factory-fitted CNG system. Tata's published specifications list 366 litres for the petrol version and 210 litres for the CNG version.

Depending on the variant, the Tata Punch can be equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, wireless charging, rear AC vents, sunroof and a 360-degree camera.

This makes the higher variants feel considerably more feature-rich than the entry-level versions. However, buyers should choose the variant based on the features they will actually use rather than paying simply for a longer equipment list.

Safety is one of the Tata Punch's strongest selling points. The facelifted Punch carries a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, making its crash-test performance an important differentiator in the segment. The highlights of the safety package include:

The Tata Punch competes primarily with compact, SUV-styled cars such as the Hyundai Exter and, depending on the buyer's requirements, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.

• Maruti Suzuki Fronx: A larger crossover with a more crossover-like design and a broader powertrain range.

The Punch's key differentiators are its compact dimensions, SUV-like design and safety credentials. A buyer prioritising outright performance may prefer the turbo-petrol options available elsewhere, while someone focused on city driving and safety may find the Punch more appealing.
