Outline

Plug-in hybrid technology in India has long been a privilege of the premium segment. Think Volvo, BMW, or Porsche territory. BYD India is looking to change that with the Seal U DM-i, which the company has officially introduced in the country as its first PHEV offering. A commercial launch is planned before the end of 2026.

BYD Seal U DM-i — What makes it different?

The Seal U DM-i does not use a conventional hybrid setup. BYD's DM-i powertrain combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an 18.3 kWh Blade battery and two electric motors. One motor functions as a generator and the other serves as the traction unit that actually drives the wheels. The battery can be charged from an external source, which puts the Seal U DM-i in the same bracket as a plug-in hybrid rather than a self-charging mild hybrid.

The system operates in multiple modes depending on driving conditions. In city traffic or at lower speeds, the car draws purely from the battery in EV mode. When more energy is needed, the petrol engine kicks in as a generator rather than driving the wheels directly. This is what BYD refers to as Series mode. At higher loads, the engine also directly powers the wheels while simultaneously keeping the battery topped up. The result is a claimed combined range of over 1,200km, with up to 70km available on pure electric power from a full charge.

BYD Seal U DM-i size and cabin

The Seal U is a proper mid-size SUV. At 4.7 metres in length with a 2,765mm wheelbase, it offers comfortable five-seat accommodation. India-specific features are yet to be confirmed, but the global version gives a clear picture of what to expect. The cabin is centred around a rotating infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A panoramic sunroof, air purifier, Level 2 ADAS, and V2L support are also part of the package. V2L lets the car supply power to external devices directly from the battery, which is a useful feature for travel or work-from-car situations.

Until now, PHEV technology in India has been almost exclusively available in vehicles priced upwards of Rs. 1.50 crore. That has kept it well out of reach for the mainstream buyer who is curious about electrification but not yet ready to go fully electric. The Seal U DM-i is expected to arrive at a price point between Rs. 45 and Rs. 50 lakh, which would make it the most accessible plug-in hybrid SUV in India by a significant margin. For buyers who cover long distances or do not have reliable home charging infrastructure, the DM-i system could offer a genuinely practical alternative to both conventional petrol SUVs and fully electric options.
