Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 PHEV launched at Rs 1.45 crore — Details inside!

Mercedes-Benz has launched the AMG E 53 plug-in hybrid in India, priced at Rs 1.45 crore for the Performance Edition and Rs 1.48 crore for the Racing Edition (both ex-showroom). Based on the updated E-Class, the AMG E 53 is the first plug-in hybrid performance sedan in the E-Class lineup for the Indian market, combining a turbo-petrol engine with electric assistance.

The AMG E 53 is based on the updated E-Class but gets several AMG-specific design upgrades. These include redesigned front and rear bumpers, an illuminated grille, wider fenders, a rear diffuser, and a lip spoiler. It also comes with 20-inch alloy wheels, larger brakes and quad exhaust tips as standard. 

The sedan is available in six exterior colours: Polar White, Verde Silver, Obsidian Black, Nautical Blue, Velvet Brown, and Graphite Grey Metallic. It measures 4,949 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,471 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,961 mm.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 PHEV comes equipped with a 12.3-inch digital driver's display and a 14.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include wireless phone charging, a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, 4-way lumbar support, ambient lighting with brand logo projection, roller sunblinds for the rear doors, an electric rear sunblind, AMG steering wheel buttons, multiple drive modes, and an acoustic presence indicator.

The cabin is also fitted with a Burmester 4D surround sound system featuring 17 speakers, four exciters, and 730W of output. On the safety front, the AMG E 53 PHEV comes with multiple airbags, active steering assist, a 360-degree camera, adaptive highbeam assist plus, keyless-go, hands-free access, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and several other driver assistance features.

The new Mercedes-AMG E 53 is now a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), replacing the 48V mild-hybrid system used in the previous model. It combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol engine with a 120kW electric motor integrated into the 9-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission.

The combined powertrain produces 585 bhp and 750 Nm of torque, with power sent to all four wheels through Mercedes' AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, the Race Start function boosts output to 612 bhp, helping the sedan accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph and can be increased to 280 kmph with the optional AMG Driver's Package.

The plug-in hybrid system uses a 400V lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 28.6 kWh (21.2 kWh usable). It offers a claimed electric-only range of over 100 km (WLTP) and can run on electric power alone at speeds of up to 140 kmph. Charging is handled by an 11kW AC onboard charger as standard. In markets where it is available, an optional 60kW DC fast charger can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes.

The AMG E 53 PHEV gets a number of upgrades to improve the way it drives. These include extra chassis bracing, an 11 mm wider front track, and active rear-axle steering. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to make the car easier to manoeuvre, while at higher speeds they turn in the same direction for better stability.

The sedan also offers Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, Individual, Electric, and Battery Hold drive modes. Its braking system has been specially tuned to work with the hybrid system's energy recuperation, helping recover energy during braking.
