Outline

The Toyota Starlet is one of the more affordable and popular hatchbacks sold in South Africa. Built in India, the hatchback is positioned as a practical and budget-friendly city car.

But when Global NCAP put the 2026 model through its #SaferCarsForAfrica programme, the results stopped many people in their tracks. The car scored zero stars for adult occupant protection, the lowest possible outcome. While managing a more modest three stars for child safety. For a car that many families rely on every day, those numbers deserve a careful, honest look.

In the frontal offset crash test, the Toyota Starlet scored 9.908 points. More importantly, Global NCAP noted that the bodyshell and footwell area were unstable after the impact. This means the structure may not handle stronger crash loads effectively, which is a serious concern.

For front occupants, head protection was rated adequate for the driver and good for the passenger. Neck protection was rated good, while chest protection was rated adequate for both occupants. The weaker areas were the knees and lower legs, where protection ranged from marginal to adequate because of possible contact with hard structures behind the dashboard.

The bigger issue came in the side impact test. Head and chest protection were both rated poor, which heavily affected the final score. Global NCAP did not conduct the side pole impact test either, because the car does not get standard curtain airbags or side head protection.

Toyota Starlet child occupant protection — Better but still limited picture

The child safety result was better, with the Toyota Starlet scoring 29.33 out of 49 points and earning a three-star child occupant protection rating. Global NCAP tested the car with two rear-facing child seats mounted using ISOFIX anchors.

In the frontal crash test, the 18-month-old dummy’s head was well protected, though chest protection was limited. The 3-year-old dummy showed weaker protection, with the head making contact with the interior and chest protection rated low.

In the side impact test, the 18-month-old dummy remained fully protected. However, the 3-year-old dummy’s head made contact during the crash, which resulted in zero points for that test. The Starlet gets three-point seatbelts for all seats and ISOFIX mounts for the rear outer seats. It also includes proper warning labels for rear-facing child seats. However, the hatchback does not get a passenger airbag cut-off switch.

Toyota Starlet safety features — What is standard and what is missing

Across all variants, the Toyota Starlet gets six airbags as standard, including front, side, and curtain airbags. ABS, brake assist, EBD, electronic stability control, hill assist, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminders, child locks, and ISOFIX mounts are also standard across the lineup. Global NCAP also rated the ESC system as acceptable in its testing.

The bigger issue is the lack of advanced safety technology. The Starlet does not offer autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, speed assist, or pedestrian protection systems on any variant. These features are becoming more common even in smaller and budget cars.

Higher XR variants add features like a 9-inch touchscreen, cruise control, reverse camera, TFT display, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. However, these comfort features do not address the safety concerns highlighted in the crash test results.
