Tata Motors has been testing the next-generation Nexon for some time, with several spy shots revealing some of the changes planned for India's popular compact SUV. The latest test mule has been spotted with alloy wheels similar to those used on the Tata Curvv, suggesting that Tata could be testing a larger wheel option for the new Nexon.
Next-gen Tata Nexon spy shots — What the Curvv alloys suggest
The latest spy shots, shared by Trakin Auto, show the Nexon prototype with black-and-machined alloy wheels featuring the same petal-like design seen on the Curvv. The Curvv gets this design with 18-inch wheels, which suggests that Tata could be testing a similar wheel size on the next-gen Nexon.
However, the tyre sidewall markings are not clear in the images, so the exact wheel size cannot be confirmed yet. The matching design is still a clear indication that Tata is testing a different wheel-and-tyre setup.
A familiar pattern from the Harrier facelift
This is not the first time Tata has used an existing wheel design during testing. Harrier facelift test mules were previously spotted with Hexa's 19-inch alloy wheels before Tata introduced a 19-inch wheel option, with a different design, on the production model.
The Nexon could follow a similar approach, with Tata using an existing design to test a larger wheel and tyre package before finalising the production version. If offered, larger wheels are likely to be available on the higher variants, while lower trims could continue with smaller sizes.
How it compares with rival SUVs
The current Nexon uses 16-inch alloy wheels, which is common among sub-4-metre SUVs. However, some rivals already offer larger 17-inch alloys on higher variants, including the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Skoda Kylaq and Kia Syros.
If Tata introduces 18-inch wheels on the next-gen Nexon, it would give the SUV a larger wheel option than these rivals. The bigger wheels could also suit the more upright design and larger wheel arches seen on earlier test mules.
What else has been spotted on the next-gen Nexon so far
Earlier spy shots have shown the next-gen Nexon with a boxier side profile and a straighter roofline. This could create more headroom for rear passengers. Spy shots of the cabin have also surfaced, although the interior was heavily stripped and disguised.
The test mule retained the current Nexon's steering wheel and six-speed manual gearbox, offering little information about the final cabin design. Since the test vehicle appeared to be at an early development stage, the production-ready interior is likely to be seen later.
Tata has not confirmed the final specifications yet. The next-gen Nexon is expected to continue with petrol, diesel and CNG powertrains, along with an updated version of the Nexon EV. The new model is expected to launch sometime in 2027.
