Tata Avinya switches to Chery-JLR Freelander platform — First model confirmed for 2027
- 1Avinya range will now use the Freelander platform co-developed by Chery and JLR
- 2Original plan of using JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) has been dropped
- 3Freelander platform runs an 800-volt electrical architecture
Tata Motors has taken a sharp turn in the technical roadmap for its Avinya premium electric brand. The Avinya range, which was originally set to ride on Jaguar Land Rover's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), will instead use the Freelander platform co-developed by JLR and Chinese automaker Chery through their joint venture, CJLR. The first vehicle on this new foundation, an SUV, is now confirmed for a 2027 launch in India.
The reasoning behind the switch is being read as a practical one. EMA is a premium-grade architecture, and borrowing the already-proven Freelander platform trims development costs and compresses the timeline to market. The strategic advantage is clear: Tata gets a more competitive price position for the Avinya while getting the first vehicle to showrooms faster than the original EMA path would have allowed.
Tata Avinya's new platform

The Freelander platform, which recently debuted under the CJLR Freelander 8, will underpin future models in the Tata Avinya range. It uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing support for ultra-fast DC charging speeds of up to 350 kW. This can significantly reduce charging times compared to conventional EVs.
The platform has also been designed to support multiple powertrain options, including fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender systems. In a range-extender setup, a petrol engine works as a generator to charge the battery, while the electric motor continues to drive the wheels. This offers added flexibility, particularly in markets where charging infrastructure is still developing.

Tata has not yet confirmed which powertrain options will be offered on future Avinya models. However, the platform gives the company the flexibility to explore multiple technologies. In its official statement, Tata Motors said the Tata Avinya range is being developed on multiple scalable platforms and architectures, with collaboration from Jaguar Land Rover and its partners playing an important role in its premium EV strategy.

First Avinya — What is known
The first vehicle in the Avinya range headed to India is expected to be the Avinya X, a large SUV measuring over five metres. Battery options are expected in the 65-80 kWh range, with final figures yet to be confirmed. It will be produced at the TMPV-JLR manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu, which is a newly operational, dedicated EV plant. The 2027 launch timeline has been officially confirmed by Tata Motors.

On the retail side, Tata is treating the Avinya as a distinct brand rather than just a premium variant of its mainstream lineup. A dedicated retail network is being planned, separate from existing Tata Motors showrooms. An online configurator for the Avinya range is also under evaluation, pointing toward a direct-to-consumer or boutique-style buying experience rather than the conventional dealership model.
Tata is clearly positioning Avinya as a clean break from its current identity. With a different platform, a different production facility, a separate sales network, and an 800V charging architecture that puts it in serious fast-charging territory, the question is whether Indian luxury EV buyers will see it in those terms when it arrives.
