Volvo EX40 discontinued in India — Brand prepares for updated version and EX90 launch
- 1Volvo has removed the EX40 from its official India website
- 2Discontinuation is described as interim and not permanent
- 3An updated version of the EX40 is currently in development
Volvo Cars India has quietly discontinued the EX40, removing it from its official website with no announcement or fanfare. The model is no longer listed as an available option for buyers in the country. That said, Volvo has indicated this is not a permanent exit. The EX40 is in the middle of a generation update, and an improved version is expected to return to India before the end of 2026.
What happened to the Volvo EX40?

The Volvo EX40 has had a longer run in India than most people might realise. It entered the market way back in 2018 under the XC40 name as Volvo's entry-level SUV, with a petrol option added in 2020. The electric version, the XC40 Recharge, arrived in 2022 and was one of the earliest pure electric luxury SUVs available in the country at the time. It was subsequently renamed the EX40 last year as part of Volvo's broader global effort to reposition its electric lineup under the EX and EC naming scheme. The most recent version sold here was the EX40 single motor setup.
With the current-generation model phased out and the next-gen still in development, the listing has been taken down. Volvo's India operations have confirmed that the updated EX40 is on the way and is expected to arrive before 2026 ends.
What Volvo currently offers in India
With the Volvo EX40 currently unavailable, Volvo Cars's electric lineup in India is now limited to two models. The entry point is the Volvo EX30, priced at Rs 41 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes with a 69 kWh battery pack and a rear-mounted electric motor. Higher up the range is the Volvo EC40, priced at Rs 59 lakh (ex-showroom), featuring a larger 78 kWh battery and a dual-motor AWD setup.

Both EVs remain on sale and currently lead Volvo's electric vehicle strategy in India. However, the absence of the EX40 leaves a noticeable gap in the lineup, as it was Volvo's most traditional SUV-shaped EV. On the ICE and hybrid side, Volvo continues to offer the Volvo XC60, priced from Rs 69.60 lakh, and the flagship Volvo XC90, which starts at Rs 98.80 lakh (both ex-showroom).
Two new models before 2026 ends
Volvo has a fairly ambitious plan for the second half of 2026 in India. Alongside the updated EX40 relaunch, the brand also intends to bring in the EX90 before the year closes out. The EX90 is Volvo's flagship model globally, a large three-row electric SUV that represents the top of what the brand currently offers. Its arrival in India would mark a meaningful step up in Volvo's ambition here, placing a full-size luxury electric SUV in a market where that category is only just starting to take shape. If both timelines hold, Volvo India could end 2026 with three active electric models across a wider price and size range than before.
