NHAI Announces Fee Hike for FASTag Annual Pass; New Rates Effective April 1
As highway travel becomes increasingly digitised and frictionless, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced an upward revision in the pricing of the widely adopted FASTag Annual Pass. Effective April 1, 2026, private vehicle owners who commute frequently across the national highway network will be required to pay ₹3,075 for the prepaid FASTag Annual Pass, marking a 2.5 per cent increase from the introductory price of ₹3,000. The adjustment, implemented ahead of the 2026–27 financial year, comes at a time when digital toll subscriptions have fundamentally altered how regular commuters navigate the country's extensive road infrastructure.
However, if you are planning to get yourself the FASTag Annual Pass, you still hold the opportunity to secure it at ₹3,000, provided you apply before the March 31 deadline.
Regulatory Framework Behind the Price Revision
The price hike, amounting to an additional ₹75 per year, is governed by established statutory protocols rather than arbitrary pricing measures. According to official statements released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), this revision has been executed in strict accordance with the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
This regulatory mechanism mandates that highway toll fees, including specific monthly and annual passes, undergo systematic annual revisions. The measured increase ensures that toll revenue collection keeps pace with the rising costs of construction materials, routine road maintenance, and the overall upkeep of the national highway network. However, authorities have clarified that motorists who purchase or renew their annual subscriptions before the March 31 deadline can still secure the pass at the outgoing ₹3,000 rate.
How Does the FASTag Annual Pass Work
Introduced on August 15, 2025, to provide financial relief and effortless cruising to heavy highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass functions as a seamless digital add-on to a vehicle's existing FASTag ecosystem. The scheme is exclusively available for non-commercial private vehicles, specifically categorised as cars, jeeps, and vans. For the stipulated one-time payment, the pass grants drivers prepaid access to up to 200 toll crossings at approximately 1,150 designated toll plazas situated on National Highways and National Expressways.
The subscription's validity concludes either when the 200-crossing limit is exhausted or upon the completion of one full year from the exact date of digital activation, whichever parameter is met first. Once either condition is fulfilled, the system automatically reverts to deducting standard, per-trip toll rates from the user’s linked prepaid wallet.
Users retain the option to immediately repurchase the pass once the 200-trip limit is exhausted, even if the one-year calendar period has not yet ended.
Notably, the pass remains invalid at toll plazas managed by state governments, local municipal bodies, or distinct private operators, where regular user fees will continue to be levied.
Adoption Rates and Commuter Implications
Despite the slight upward revision in the subscription cost, the underlying value proposition of the FASTag Annual Pass remains highly favourable for daily intercity commuters. By locking in a flat fee, regular drivers are essentially shielded from varying and unpredictable toll rates across different long-distance routes, bringing the average per-trip cost down significantly. Official government data highlights the aggressive adoption curve of this prepaid model; since its launch, over 56 lakh users have subscribed to the annual pass.
Furthermore, MoRTH statistics indicate that the pass currently accounts for roughly 28 per cent of all non-commercial car transactions recorded on the national highway network. High-density corridors have seen the most intense utilisation, with the Bijwasan fee plaza on the Delhi-Gurugram border recording the highest usage, where approximately 57 per cent of total car crossings are facilitated through the annual pass.
Digital Procurement and Seamless Activation
Vehicle owners can purchase the updated ₹3,075 subscription directly through the official Rajmarg Yatra mobile application or the dedicated NHAI web portal using standard digital payment methods. Following a successful transaction, the annual pass is digitally integrated and activated on the vehicle's pre-existing windshield FASTag within a span of two hours, ensuring that highway travel remains uninterrupted and efficiently managed.
