Outline

The Volkswagen Polo is a well known name, with over 20 million units sold across six generations since 1975. On April 29, 2026, Volkswagen unveiled its seventh generation, now fully electric. The new Volkswagen ID.Polo is a major shift for the brand. It introduces Volkswagen’s new Pure Positive design language, adds features like traffic light recognition, and offers a claimed range of up to 455 km. Pre-sales have started in Germany at €24,995.

This is not just an electric version of the old Polo. It is a complete redesign built on a new platform while keeping the Polo name and identity.

The Volkswagen ID. Polo is the first model to fully use Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design language, created by chief designer Andreas Mindt. The focus is on clean, simple styling with a friendly front look and a strong rear stance.

A key design detail is the C pillar, inspired by the first generation Volkswagen Golf. At the front, it gets a glowing VW badge and a connected light strip between the headlamps. Higher trims add IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps and 3D LED tail lamps. It measures 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, 1,530 mm in height, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase. The size is similar to the regular Polo, but the new MEB+ platform offers more interior space.

Volkswagen ID.Polo MEB+ platform adds 19 mm of interior length, along with more headroom and width. Boot space is 441 litres, up 25% from the old Polo’s 351 litres, and expands to 1,240 litres with the rear seats folded.

The cabin features a minimal design with high-quality materials, soft-touch surfaces, and stitched door trims with small VW badges. There are two main screens: a 10-inch digital driver display and a 13-inch central infotainment screen. Volkswagen has kept physical buttons for key controls. A unique feature is Retro Display mode, which changes the digital cluster to classic Golf style dials and adds vintage inspired animations on the infotainment screen.

2026 Volkswagen ID.Polo features

The Volkswagen ID. Polo MEB+ platform also allows features from higher segments to be offered in this compact EV. All variants get DC fast charging (90 kW to 130 kW depending on trim), one pedal driving, and Vehicle to Load function up to 3.6 kW, which can power devices through a 230 V socket inside the cabin.

From the Life trim, it adds Adaptive Cruise Control, rear camera, front parking sensors, cross traffic assist, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice control, wireless charging, and folding mirrors with memory. The Style trim adds IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps, illuminated VW logo, 3D tail lamps, ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, and dual zone climate control.

Optional features include a Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable seats with massage and memory, and other comfort upgrades. Connected Travel Assist is also available, offering assisted driving and traffic light response, a feature not common in this segment.

2026 Volkswagen ID.Polo battery specs

The Volkswagen ID. Polo is built on a new front wheel drive platform and will be offered in multiple performance options. The entry 85kW (116PS) version uses a 37kWh LFP battery, offering up to 329km range with DC fast charging up to 90kW, allowing 10 to 80% charge in about 23 minutes. A 99kW (135PS) version is also planned with the same battery and similar performance, but it is still close to production stage and not available at launch.

The main launch variant is the 155kW (211PS) version, paired with a larger 52kWh NMC battery. It delivers up to 455km range (WLTP) and supports 130kW DC fast charging, with 10 to 80% charging in around 24 minutes. A performance-focused ID. Polo GTI with 166kW (226PS) is expected later. All variants come with DC fast charging as standard.
