Top 10 best selling SUVs in India — A mixed bag

The Indian automotive market is dominated by SUVs today. Sedans are slowly disappearing from the portfolios of automakers, and there are fresh body styles such as the coupe SUV coming in. The popularity of SUVs is not restricted to India but is a global phenomena, with companies such as Ferrari and Rolls Royce too coming up with their versions of an ‘SUV’. We aren’t here to discuss these cars here at the moment though. Getting back to the point, here’s a list of the top 10 best selling SUVs in India, including the latest data from May 2025.

Maruti Brezza

Selling 15,566 units last month, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza claimed the first spot on the list of the best selling SUVs in India in May 2025. The Brezza comes with a 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine, generating 103PS and 137Nm of torque. There’s also the option of a factory-fitted CNG, further widening the appeal of this SUV.
Hyundai Creta

The Hyundai Creta was pushed to the second spot last month, gathering a total sales of 14,860 units. The number of Hyundai Cretas sold every month is greater than the total monthly sales of quite a few mass market car manufacturers in India.
Mahindra Scorpio

The Scorpio has been the best selling Mahindra SUV in India consistently over the past few months, selling 14,401 units in the last month itself. This includes the sale of both Mahindra Scorpio Classic as well as Mahindra Scorpio N, with the brand selling more diesel Scorpios than petrol ones.

Maruti Fronx

The Maruti Fronx is not just a better-looking Baleno. It proves to be an appealing package that bundles practicality, driveability, as well as a great design. MSIL has been able to sell 13,584 units of the Fronx in May 2025, placing it at the fourth spot.
Tata Punch

The Tata Punch has moved to the fifth spot in the list of top selling SUVs in India in the month of May 2025, with a cumulative sales figure of 13,133 units across powertrains and variants. Whether or not it should be called an SUV is a very debatable topic though.

Tata Nexon

Ranking just behind the Tata Punch, the Tata Nexon gathered 13,096 units of sales during the same period. The Tata Nexon is available in a variety of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, electric, and now CNG too! It is, in fact, the first passenger car in India to get a turbocharged-petrol engine fitted with a CNG kit.
Mahindra Thar

Mahindra has got another contender for this list, establishing its stronghold with the new Mahindra Thar Roxx. The Thar Roxx and the 3-door Thar together brought in 10,389 units of sales in the month of May 2025.
Mahindra Bolero

Overtaking most of its own stablemates like the XUV700 and the XUV 3XO, the Mahindra Bolero takes the eighth spot in this list. The Indian carmaker sold a combined 8,942 units of the Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Bolero Neo, and Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus in May 2025.

Kia Sonet

Kia sold 8,054 units of its most selling car in India last month, steering ahead of the Seltos and the Syros by handsome margins. The Sonet also ranks above its sister-car, the Hyundai Venue.
Mahindra XUV 3XO

Making a comeback to this list, the Mahindra XUV 3XO garnered 7,952 units of sales in the month of May 2025. The SUV comes with a variety of engine options including a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with direct injection, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine.
